We had our quarterly(ish) meetup today at the new Whole Foods Market in Elk Grove, CA—but not before a quick stop at Philz Coffee to fuel up. 😴 The SCC was started by four gentlemen, all named Dave, with a simple idea: bring Sacramento-area produce people together at a new store in the region to talk a little shop, walk the produce department, and most importantly, catch up on life outside of industry events. More than a decade later, our group has expanded to include people not exclusively named Dave (including yours truly, the first woman to join the group 😉), hailing from various segments across the industry. 〽️Update on the US Egg Market and Avian Influenza: - Avian Influenza has not impacted a major layer operation since early October. - Virus remains present across the country but has spared layers operations. - Industry is unsure how or why layers have stayed out of the path. - This has allowed production to recover. - Expansions have also added to the total layer population. - USDA reporting 302.85MM layers as of December 1st, following gov. shutdown. - Layer numbers appear under-reported, given market conditions. - Markets have collapsed, reaching the lowest levels since summer 2023. - 1st of the year inventory levels are the 2nd highest in the last decade. - Retail prices have been slow to follow wholesale benchmarks. - Exports, which typically account for about 3-4% of production, are limited. - Foodservice demand is slow, with limited promotional activity. - Seasonal holiday schedules slowed manufacturing and product needs. - Further processors have built substantial shell egg inventories. - Liquid prices nearing 5-year lows. - Inventories of frozen and dried products are rapidly increasing. - Supply is clearly outweighing demand, odd given the reported flock size. - The US population has been affected by deportation. - Est. 2mm people out of the country. - Lower prices should generate aggressive retail promotion and price adjustments. - Additional layer growth could keep pressure on the market. - HPAI will remain a catalyst. Opening Prices for U.S. Pistachios – New Season 2025/26 Wonderful Pistachios has officially announced the first prices of the new U.S. crop: 🔹 In-shell Pistachios, 21–25, Extra No. 1 → $9.02/kg ($4.10/lb) 🔹 Golden Hills variety, raw pistachios → $8.47/kg ($3.85/lb) 🔹 Kerman variety, raw pistachios → $8.25/kg ($3.75/lb) 📌 These opening figures serve as a global benchmark, influencing trade across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. ⸻ 🌍 Impact on Iran’s Pistachio Market The U.S. announcement immediately puts pressure on Iranian exporters: • For standard round varieties, prices above $7.5$ per kg are now unrealistic unless supported by superior kernel quality. (Sizes in Iran is small this year , Fandoghi in average will be 34/36 ) • Green kernels remain the only product with steady, genuine demand, where Iran continues to hold a strong advantage. • Exporters will adjust offers to remain competitive, especially in China, India, Turkey, and the EU. ⸻ 🇨🇳 Why China’s Decision Matters China is the swing buyer in the global pistachio trade: • It is the fastest-growing market, with strong gifting culture and rising middle-class consumption. • Buyers closely compare Iranian vs. U.S. pistachios on price, quality, and logistics. • Political and regulatory factors matter: U.S. pistachios face tariffs, while Iran faces banking and sanction-related barriers. • Because of their large-volume, short-window purchases, Chinese buyers can tip the balance of global prices. 👉 If China steps in strongly, both U.S. and Iranian markets could stabilize. 👉 If China delays or reduces buying, global inventories will weigh on prices for months. ⸻ 🔑 The key question now: Will China step in to stabilize the pistachio market, or will oversupply keep pressure on prices into 2026?
