Marie Thompson posted thisNY Climate Week is almost here! AI and the grid are fully intertwined, and there are huge questions around just how much AI can be part of actually solving problems for the grid, and almost more importantly, where it can't. Very excited to be moderating panel at the Nest Campus with Josh Wong, CEO of Powerhouse Ventures portfolio company ThinkLabs AI, and Christopher Levesque, CEO of TerraPower. We'll be going deep and I'll be asking pointy questions to get to the bottom of this, including a splash another intertwined topic you might have heard of: nuclear power. Come join us! We also have a lot of other events happening across the week, if you're around please come say hi. #ClimateTech #Grid #AI #EnergyTransition #ClimateWeekNYC

Marie Thompson shared thisIf you ever wanted to see what early stage energy x AI investing is like, I can confirm that it's a *wild* ride right now and we could use your help and brainpower. While I am personally in denial that summer is almost over (?!), it does mean that my favorite few months of the year are coming up which includes welcoming a fall intern to our team. Applications are open now, come work with us!Marie Thompson shared thisCome work with me! Marie Thompson shared thisThanks Dimitry Gershenson and Hannah Friedman for inviting me into this event! It's a noisy, rapidly changing (said otherwise perhaps "chaotic and increasingly unhinged") fundraising environment out there, and I'm looking forward to digging in during this conversation. If you haven't signed up yet, please join us!Marie Thompson shared thisSo excited for our upcoming Community Event, "Tailoring Your Pitch: Storytelling for Early-Stage Fundraising in Climate" on May 28th at 11AM PT. Our speaker list is almost final, and I'll be joined by Hannah Friedman of Lupine Finance, Daniel Beer of General Proxy, and Marie Thompson of Powerhouse. We may have one more surprise guest join us. Some context: today's capital markets are incredibly noisy, and AI is taking up a lot of the oxygen in the room. Whether you are raising early-stage equity or debt, the fundamentals of a great pitch remain the same: you need a rock-solid story, a compelling financial narrative, and a clear articulation of your impact. So how do you cut through the hype and tell an effective, cohesive story that actually lands with capital allocators, regardless of the type of funding you're pursuing? Come join us next week: 📅 Thursday, May 28th 🕙 11.00AM - 12.30 PM PT // 2:00 - 3:30 PM ET During this 90 min session, we'll dig into what makes a fundraising narrative truly compelling across the board: - how to build a strong, unified financial narrative that resonates with any audience - how to effectively communicate your impact and overarching story without getting lost in the weeds - how to break through the current AI hype cycle and capture investor attention when you're not an AI company - and much more As always, we're grateful for our sponsor, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati! Marie Thompson shared thisThank goodness that Jamie Link will be at Transition AI with me. Hard hitting technical questions, grounded insight, and great vibes? She is *the* person to talk to. Want to chat the wild, chaotic scene of early stage innovation with a lot of unproven hypotheses for what the heck is going to happen? I'll be there too, let's connect!Marie Thompson shared thisEveryone is talking about powering new AI data centers, but what does it actually take to build and operate the infrastructure behind it? Dr. Jamie Link, Executive Vice President of Powerhouse Innovation, will be at Transition AI on April 13–14, connecting with partners working to expand grid capacity and scale AI infrastructure across the U.S. This is a complex moment for stakeholders across power generation, data centers, and utilities — and exactly the kind of challenge we’re built to help navigate. If you’ll be there, we’d love to connect. https://lnkd.in/g287YGZR

Marie Thompson reacted on thisMarie Thompson reacted on thisToday is Class 3 Technologies' first anniversary! Hard to believe that one year ago we spun out of Arup. Since then, the question I probably get asked most often is: “How’s it going?” “Pretty well!” is what I usually say. I rarely can compose my thoughts in the moment to offer a more considered response. So, one year in, here it is. Yesterday was actually our biggest day ever, and in the past week alone we’ve signed three major contracts, including renewals from existing customers. We have marquee organizations using #Iris that I’m genuinely proud of and hoping we’ll be able to talk about publicly soon. At the same time, we’re spending less than we expected. Part of that is because we have an incredibly mission-aligned team that supports and learns from each other. Part of it is because we have embraced AI as a way to amplify the deep domain expertise at the center of what we do, instead of replacing it. When people heard I was leaving Arup after 20 years to become CEO of a startup, they thought I was crazy. I knew it was crazy. One year in, I’ve learned that startup stress is very different from big-company stress. There is still a lot of it. But the freedom to try something new, learn from it, and change course quickly, is something that just feels...lighter. Thank you to our customers who believed that the time has come to start doing physical risk differently. Who understand that an engineering-based modeling approach can lead to more informed decisions and more resilience action that helps protect their organizations. Most of all, thank you to my team and co-founders. Starting a company is an enormous leap of faith, and an act of faith in each other. You leave behind stability for something that may or may not work. I am truly grateful that we get to do something we believe genuinely matters, together. So all in all, I guess "pretty well" sums it up.

Marie Thompson liked thisVery excited to be chatting with Catherine Boudreau about distributed compute tomorrow! Registration link is below if you are interested in the space and want to learn more.Marie Thompson liked thisI've been reporting on the rise of edge computing for months now. In April, SPAN said it'd put small servers, or "nodes," in 100 new homes paired with the company's smart panel and battery backup power. In July, Sunrun announced a similar pilot. Perimeter Compute emerged from stealth in August, and is targeting commercial office buildings with grid capacity to spare. Rune is plugging small data centers into utility-scale solar and wind projects to soak up curtailed power. Why? It's really hard to build a gigawatt-scale data center and it takes years to hook up to the grid. And AI workloads are shifting to inference — the actual use of chatbots or self-driving cars — that use less electricity. I've heard that selling this distributed compute can be quite lucrative if it works. I have so many questions about how this will work and what it means for the grid. Excited to unpack them with Katie Clasen of Prelude Ventures on Wednesday at 2pm EST for the next Latitude Media Dispatch! Register here: https://lnkd.in/eNfy_FyR

Marie Thompson reacted on thisMarie Thompson reacted on thisWhat if a fun day on bikes could help put food on the tables of East Bay families? Each year, my cycling club, C510, hosts the East Bay Dirt Classic to raise money for the Alameda County Community Food Bank. Over the past decade, the event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight food insecurity which continues to be a challenge in our community. The East Bay Dirt Classic is a fun day of mountain and gravel biking, but its most important purpose is helping our neighbors. Every donation, regardless of size, moves us closer to our fundraising goal. Our all-volunteer club designs the course, runs all operations from pictures to marshaling to cooking at the after-race BBQ and it's a win-win for an amazing cause. Marie Thompson reacted on thisMarie Thompson reacted on thisPhysical AI is moving quickly from promise to production, but warehouses are a good reminder that great technology isn’t enough. My years working in logistics taught me that robots only work effectively when they can navigate the interplay between people, hardware, software, and operations that rarely go according to plan. Manthan understood that complexity at a level that immediately stood out. He had both an ambitious vision for what warehouse automation could become and a deeply practical understanding of what it would take to get there. He's the kind of founder who made a last-minute, five-hour flight at the peak of a New York winter an easy decision for the chance to convince him to let us on his journey. Today, Destro is operating robots inside some of the largest logistics companies in the world, and I couldn't be more excited to see the team announce their $8M seed round, co-led by Bonfire Ventures and Base10 Partners, with participation from CoFound and Unshackled Ventures. Special thanks to Alexis for introducing me to Manthan. Manthan, Soorya and team are building at the cutting edge of physical AI, and they're just getting started. We're incredibly lucky to be along for the ride. https://lnkd.in/gw4nkNSV

Exciting new research from BloombergNEF that reinforces the principles behind the Emissions First Partnership. BNEF analyzed nearly 3,000 corporate PPAs and found that Amazon has displaced 35.5 megatons of CO2 through our renewable energy purchases - more than any other company globally. But here's the key insight: the carbon impact varies dramatically by region. Each megawatt avoids 1.9 kilotons of CO2 in Asia-Pacific, compared to 1 kiloton in the Americas. This is exactly why impact accounting (aka: a consequential metric) matters for driving real climate outcomes. As we scale our carbon-free energy portfolio - now over 45GW - we're focused on ensuring every deal drives maximum emissions reductions. That's the core principle behind the Emissions First Partnership: accounting frameworks should incentivize decisions that deliver the greatest climate benefit. I'm thrilled to see BNEF prioritizing this research and taking this new lens to assess corporate investments in carbon-free energy. Excellent discussion with Congressman Mike Levin and Kyle (Jones) Baker at the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC) Institute annual conference in #Washington. Our focus: how to engage voters and consumers in the clean-energy story. We can’t just build better technology. We must build belief. The clean-energy transition is not just about capital and business building - it’s also a narrative project. Winning commercially now means competing just as hard for cultural and political power as we do for market share. The future of green power depends on it. #SEEC #GreenPower #energytransition

Great insights from DOE alum Brian Mahar on the evolution of DOE's loan-making capacity and key questions going forward. Biggest question for me: how can DOE maintain trust given loans for large scale projects will necessarily span multiple administrations?

And the paper is finally out. "Unlocking California's Flexible Load: A Durable Blueprint for Affordability and Reliability" authored by Ric O'Connell at GridLab, Pete Skala at Kevala, and me at Energy and Environmental Economics, Inc. I'm excited we'll be presenting it today at the UC Davis Energy and Efficiency Institute Demand Flexibility Executive Roundtable. And I already heard Ric on KQED 88.5 FM this morning! This chart is the reason I think this topic is so important. The California Public Utilities Commission and California ISO resource plans include incremental procurement of 31 GW of utility-scale storage between now and 2036. Per the California Energy Commission the total installed capacity for behind-the-meter storage reaches only 6 GW by 2036. EVs, on the other hand, will total 112 GW of installed capacity. Enrolling just 10 percent of the light-duty fleet in vehicle-to-grid could cover roughly 30 percent of the state's cumulative storage procurement over the next 10 years. The key will be to enable, accredit, manage and compensate discharge from EVs so they can offset some of the planned utility scale storage procurement. Any credible case for expanding flexible load compensation has to reckon with net energy metering. Under California's high volumetric rates, retail rate compensation for rooftop PV has shifted costs to non-participating customers. The Net Billing Tariff has slowed the rate of this cost shift by reducing export compensation but still compensates self-consumption of PV generation and storage discharge well above avoided cost. New compensation for flexibility from EVs will need to put energy affordability first, paying below avoided costs for verified grid services over and above the response that retail rates already induce to ensure net benefits for all ratepayers. California now has in place the flexible resource base with the technology to measure and control it so distributed energy resources can become a real alternative to capital spending and lower bills for everyone. https://lnkd.in/g8zKbjSU
