Reina vanDelft posted thisAfter Decades in Retail, I’m Writing the Stories So, I turned 65 last month. And I’m not done yet. In fact, I’m just starting to thrive—and finally making time for some of the things I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Writing. Speaking. Telling stories. Pivoting has always been part of my vocabulary, both personally and professionally. And for years, I’ve been telling stories—about my career, my life, the people I’ve met and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. Over the past few years, I kept hearing: “You need to write and tell your stories.” So, I finally listened. I’ve been doodling stories for years, and I recently started a blog called ModernTake65. The blog is my stepping stone toward a book—and part of a new chapter in my speaking journey. The stories will cover a lot of ground: • A retail career spanning decades, its ups, downs, and lessons along the way • Parenting • Travel • Marriage • Reinvention • Successes • Failures • And all the funny—and not-so-funny—stories in between And for those who know me through the retail community, there is plenty of retail woven throughout it all. I’m also ramping up my speaking. I’ve had the opportunity to speak with a few smaller groups already, and I’m excited to continue building on that experience, sharing stories, lessons, and perspectives from decades in retail, leadership, and life. If you’re looking for a speaker for your team, organization, or retail community, I’d love to connect. This feels like a new adventure, but really, it’s a continuation of everything I’ve been doing for decades—just in a different way. If you’ve been part of my retail journey over the years, I hope you’ll follow along. Reina vanDelft shared thisBrilliant response to the Callaway Ad Having spent decades in the corporate world, I have seen this story unfold far too many times. Beyond the marketing, the audience, and the business of golf, where was the adult in the room who could have simply said, “Umm…maybe not.” I’m sure there were a few laughs. A few chuckles. And probably the familiar comments afterward that I have heard too many times. “Reina, loosen up.” “You’re taking this too seriously.” “It’s just a joke.” But that’s exactly how these things continue. It isn’t always about intent. Sometimes it’s about judgment. About recognizing when something crosses a line—and having the courage to say so. We’ll continue to fight the fight, as always.Reina vanDelft shared thisBro culture is at it again... I played competitive golf in college. I’ve spent my career in marketing. And decades later, I still love the game. So watching the recent Callaway x Good Good ad was a pretty stunning reminder of something women in golf have been hearing, explicitly and implicitly, for generations: This game isn’t really for you. Except, increasingly, it is. Women and girls are one of the biggest growth stories in golf. There are now more than 8.1 million female on-course golfers in the U.S. Female participation has grown 45% since 2020, compared with 12% for men. Women and girls have accounted for 52% of golf’s net participation growth during that period. That context matters when one of the largest brands in golf approves an ad in which Good Good's founder, Garret Clark, physically shoves Alexis Miestowski to the ground for reaching for his driver, then stands over her with authority and a reminder of who's in control. The message is one that women already know too well: this belongs to us. Not you. And what troubles me almost as much as the creative itself is how it happened. In 2023, Callaway announced its partnership with Good Good, then best known as a successful group of male YouTube creators. At the time, Callaway said the partnership would help make golf “more inviting, visible and entertaining for golfers of all ages and backgrounds.” Three years later, that partnership produced this. There is a bigger marketing lesson here. Creators can be incredible partners. They bring audiences, cultural fluency and a kind of authenticity brands often struggle to manufacture. You can outsource content creation. You cannot outsource stewardship of your brand. Callaway has acknowledged that Good Good produced the video and that Callaway approved it. That distinction doesn't absolve Callaway. It makes the failure of brand governance even clearer. CEO Chip Brewer apologized for the video, condemned discrimination and violence, and acknowledged that Callaway's approval “should never have happened.” But nowhere in the statement did Callaway say the word women or acknowledge their importance to the brand. No recognition of the message this sent to women who have spent decades trying to find their place in this sport. No direct apology to them. For a brand that is an official marketing partner of the LPGA, that omission is hard to understand. This could have been a moment to say: "Women belong in golf. We value the millions of women and girls growing this game. We failed them with this work, and we're sorry." Instead, we got a process explanation. There’s an important lesson here for every marketer chasing relevance through creators: Look at who is in the room. Look at who is creating the work. Look at who is approving it. And, just as importantly, look at who isn't there. Because when you miss out on inclusion, eventually you get excluded. And the reaction to this ad is a pretty powerful example of exactly that.

Reina vanDelft shared thisI always thought it was fascinating that target did not sell red polos in store when the polo was the dress code. As a Sears junior dept dmm years ago, we added modern red polos and youthful khakis to the assortment. My gain .......as many target employees purchased from our Sears junior section. I hope target offers store logo options for their team members. That will Make their adherence easier and color consistent. It also gives an opportunity for senior leaders to wear on store visits - important to show to the store teams. My 2 cents 🎯Reina vanDelft shared thisTarget is tightening its dress code for store workers, part of an effort to make the shopping experience more consistent and revamp operations. Effective this summer, the co plans to require employees to wear plain red shirts w/ blue jeans or khakis. Read more about the update and how it fits into Target's strategies to get back to growth. Reina vanDelft liked thisReina vanDelft liked thisLast night, Mariachi Herencia de México performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of the Bears’ Monday Night Football matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Comprised of 14 musicians from the U.S. and Mexico, including many with roots in Jalisco, Mariachi Herencia de México is a two-time Latin GRAMMY®-nominated band representing a new bicultural generation of mariachi musicians while carrying forward one of Mexico’s most celebrated musical traditions. The anthem was also interpreted in American Sign Language by José Adán De Jesús of the Chicago Hearing Society, helping make the moment accessible to more members of the Bears community. A memorable celebration of culture, representation and the communities that are part of Bears fandom. 🐻💙

Reina vanDelft liked thisReina vanDelft liked thisI’m really looking forward to being in Boston next week for Women in Retail Leadership Circle On the Road event! There has never been a more interesting - or challenging - time to be a retail leader. Customer expectations are shifting, growth is harder to unlock, technology is changing everything, and the playbook keeps being rewritten. I am leading Top Challenges: A Collaborative Discussion, an interactive conversation about the biggest challenges facing retail leaders right now. I love this format because it’s about getting beyond the presentations and having real peer-to-peer conversations - sharing what we’re seeing, what’s working, what’s not, and learning from each other. That’s what I love about WIRLC—bringing together smart, accomplished women to have candid conversations about the real challenges we’re facing, share what’s working (and what isn’t!), and learn from one another. Boston here we come! https://lnkd.in/gpVXXvdA #WomenInRetail #WIRLC #RetailLeadership #WomenInLeadership #RetailIndustry

Reina vanDelft liked thisReina vanDelft liked thisA couple weeks ago, I heard Steve Glynn speak at the Small Business Owners Community Conference, and I immediately loved what he’s creating through Experience Milwaukee; connecting people, ideas and opportunities while shining a light on the people and places making Milwaukee what it is. I reached out the same day I returned home. Tonight, Steve and I grabbed happy hour and he introduced me to his friend Manny Lara. Three people. A few cocktails. A really cool Milwaukee neighborhood. And one of those conversations that just keeps getting deeper and more interesting. We talked about people, business, community, ideas, impact and what it looks like to build a life that actually feels like YOU. And I left thinking… This is the stuff I’m so grateful for in this season of my life. Meeting people who are unapologetically themselves. People who are creating. Connecting. Contributing. People who are making an impact simply by following what they’re passionate about. Steve and Manny, thank you for such a fun night and for reminding me how powerful a simple invitation and a genuine conversation can be. I’m excited to see where our paths continue to cross and what we might create together. Megan

🔍 This is a must-read for anyone who cares about the future of physical retail—especially independents. Peter, you articulate something many retailers are feeling but struggle to name: retail isn’t disappearing, but the middle is. Relevance today isn’t inherited, it’s earned through clarity, discipline, and intentional execution. 📊 From working closely with independent jewelers and analyzing aggregated sell-through data, the “middle lane” you describe is very real and increasingly unforgiving. Confused positioning quietly erodes margin, trust, and longevity. 🧠 Your focus on the human, sensory, and psychological advantages of physical retail is exactly right. Those advantages still exist but only for retailers willing to choose a lane and execute with conviction. ⚠️ The uncomfortable question every retailer should be asking isn’t “Will physical retail survive?” but “Have we earned our place in it?” 👏 Thank you for continuing to elevate the conversation in our industry. #PhysicalRetail #RetailStrategy #JewelryIndustry #IndependentRetail #RetailLeadership #CustomerExperience #FutureOfRetail

My colleague Bryan Eshelman recently spoke with NPR on the challenges in the sneaker market these days. As consumers pull back spending, clearly differentiated products and services become a retailer’s lifeline. If your competitive moat isn’t aligned with customer expectations, it may be time to re-think your approach for the future.

🇨🇳 China’s role in global apparel manufacturing is shifting, and brands are feeling it. Recent reports show that China remains a leader in textile and garment exports, but its share of global supply chains is adjusting as competition grows and trade patterns evolve. Rather than dominating every category, the country’s strength is becoming more selective , especially in specialized segments like knitted apparel and advanced fabrics. (https://lnkd.in/eDU4pCrY) This matters for all of us in manufacturing because it reflects a bigger reality: Production is no longer about where you make, but how you make. Control, agility, and strategic partnerships are becoming more valuable than just low cost. Our takeaway at Innovtex? 👉 China will stay crucial in global supply chains 👉 But brands need to think beyond traditional sourcing models 👉 Diversifying partnerships and building resilience isn’t optional, it’s essential
