William Gideon shared thisIt’s so true!William Gideon shared this“Nobody wants to work anymore” has become the restaurant/hospitality industry’s favorite excuse. But most of the time it isn’t a staffing problem. It’s a leadership problem. Operations complain they can’t find good people while running chaotic schedules, vague expectations, inconsistent training, and pre-shift speeches about “high standards” that never translate into an actual plan for service. When the plan is unclear, the team improvises. When the team improvises, service becomes inconsistent. Guests wait longer, mistakes increase, comps rise, and good employees burn out and leave. Turnover goes up, labor costs climb, training starts over, and leadership convinces itself the problem is “bad staff.” In reality, many organizations that claim they can’t find good people simply haven’t built operations where good people want to stay. And that leadership failure shows up directly in the numbers. Higher turnover, higher labor costs, slower service, lost repeat guests, and constant operational chaos are all expensive. The restaurants struggling the most with staffing usually aren’t suffering from a labor shortage. They’re suffering from a leadership shortage, and profitability is where that failure eventually shows up.

Wonderful savory galette (buckwheat "crepe") for me, banana chocolate pancakes for my partner in crime. Perfect breakfast on the terrace, people watching and passing time in old cobblestone streets.
