One of the most meaningful moments for me at Natural Products Expo happened during the awards ceremony at An Organic Night Out, the annual gathering hosted by the Organic Trade Association that brings the organic community together. I was at Expo West last week speaking about the need for collaboration in how we measure and report environmental outcomes in complex agricultural systems, but the highlight of the week — as it often is — was being in that room with so many people who care deeply about the future of organic. A big thank you to Katrina Staves at ORGANIC VOICES, who puts in an extraordinary amount of work to make this gathering possible. She is one of those people quietly holding the community together behind the scenes. The growth Organic Voices has achieved in its social media engagement over the past year has been remarkable (reach up by 3,500% and engagement 2,600%!), and a testament to the consistent effort she and the team have put into elevating organic voices. (Full disclosure: I serve on the boards of both Organic Voices and OFRF.) What stayed with me most this year was a moment during the Organic Night Out awards ceremony. When Joji Muramoto (UC Santa Cruz) accepted his award for Best Organic Research, he reflected on how Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF) funded his very first research project many years ago. He spoke about the importance of OFRF’s work today — and then said something remarkable: that he believed OFRF should have been the one receiving the award. It was a simple moment. But it said a lot. We live in a time when power, personal branding, and self-promotion often seem to win out over quieter forms of leadership. Moments like that matter, because they remind us that leadership like this still exists — and likely far more often than the spotlight would suggest. You see people who recognize that we are stronger when we work together. That progress comes from collaboration. That sharing credit is more powerful than claiming it. OFRF was a finalist for their incredible work building a research hub that makes agricultural research accessible to farmers — bridging science and practice in ways that strengthen both. And hearing someone use their moment on stage to shine the spotlight on others was genuinely moving. Moments like that remind us what leadership can look like at its best. These are the pockets of hope that keep this movement strong. Thank you, Joji, for that moment. And thank you to everyone who continues to show up — for organic, for farmers, and for the future of agriculture. We need more moments like that.
Congratulations Joji. You do deserve the recognition that comes with being a pioneer organic scientist publishing in the public domain! It's been a heck of a run, hasn't it!!
Love this!! Organic Farming Research Foundation's decades of behind the scenes work has made our movement so much stronger.
Love this, Charlotte! Thanks for sharing your insights and your most memorable experiences for that night. Joji Muramoto's speech was heartwarming and reminded me of how impactful our work at Organic Farming Research Foundation is. I left feeling like a winner.
Charlotte Vallaeys - 100% this was one of my favorite moments of Expo. Joji Muramoto thank you for your work- and for acknowledging Organic Farming Research Foundation's many decades of work supporting researchers like yourself.
Thank you, Charlotte, for your very kind words and encouragement. I truly believe that OFRF should have received the award this year. Please keep up with your great work!
Thank you!! ❤️
The author shared a moving experience at the Natural Products Expo, where a moment of recognition in “Organic Night Out” highlighted the value of humble leadership and collaboration in the organic farming movement, when researcher Joji Muramoto praised OFRF’s role and deemed it the most deserving of the award. Departement of Sharia https://www.univ-msila.dz/site/shs/
Congratulations to Joji and deep gratitude to OFRF and everyone who has been a supporter of organic research! Celebrating the reciprocity that has been the cornerstone of organic agriculture from it's inception.
So well said 🩷
