If I were starting from scratch today, I’d focus on building a strong foundation before worrying about specialization. Step 1: Learn the Fundamentals Start with FEMA’s Independent Study courses, including: ✅ IS-100 – Introduction to the Incident Command System ✅ IS-200 – ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents ✅ IS-700 – National Incident Management System (NIMS) ✅ IS-800 – National Response Framework These courses provide the common language used across emergency management and public safety. Step 2: Build Practical Experience Experience doesn’t have to come from a full-time emergency management job. Look for opportunities to: * Volunteer with your local emergency management agency * Participate in community preparedness events * Join a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) * Support exercises and planning initiatives * Attend LEPC meetings if they’re open to the public Every experience helps you better understand how emergency management works at the local level. You wouldn't apply to be a doctor if you've never been to university. Having the right skills is the bare minimum requirement for any job you apply for, not just in Antarctica. You wouldn't apply for a carpentry position if you're a chef. The same applies. There are some skills that will help you stand out above the rest. If you're applying for a job on a research station the following might be things to think about: 1 - Outdoor and wilderness skills. It goes without saying that working in Antarctica means you'll be outside in the cold. Having some outside experience is very helpful. 2 - Remote/wilderness/advanced first aid. These skills are useful in Antarctica particularly if you're away from base. 3 - Fire fighting. Many people on research stations are required to fill in as fire crew. National Antarctic programs provide training, but these skills are always helpful to have on your resume. 4 - Radio communications. Most people will have to use a radio at some point. Highlighting that you have some experience using appropriate radio protocols can be useful. 5 - Emergency response and incident management. Can you stay calm under pressure and respond to incidents with a clear head? Though we never want incidents, they happen, and being able to handle pressure situations is highly valued. I got my radio communication sand emergency response and incident management skills by volunteering as a surf lifesaver at one of Perth's busiest beaches. We saw plenty of injuries from water sports like surfing, as well as tending to people who'd been stung by jellyfish. I trained to respond to drownings, spinal injuries and shark attacks, though never had to put my skills to use in a real situation. You might not have a beach nearby, but how about volunteering in something that will give you similar skills?
