These obstacles often deter young women from pursuing careers in STEM, reinforcing stereotypes that these fields are unattainable or unwelcoming. In response to these challenges, mentorship has emerged as a powerful tool. It provides women with the guidance, confidence, and opportunities they need to thrive in male-dominated industries, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and innovative future in STEM. Representation Matters: Role Models and Inspiration The absence of visible female role models in STEM has long discouraged young women from pursuing careers in these fields. Seeing successful women scientists, engineers, or coders can dismantle stereotypes and normalize female excellence in STEM. Mentors step in as accessible figures who not only inspire but also share personal insights into overcoming challenges. For example, India's Vigyan Jyoti Scheme, initiated by the Department of Science and Technology, pairs young women with experienced scientists, offering mentorship and research opportunities. Such programs bridge the gap between aspiration and action by instilling confidence and fostering a sense of belonging. Kalpana Chawla, India’s first female astronaut, continues to be an enduring symbol of inspiration for aspiring STEM professionals. One of my friends recently asked me if they should apply to another friend’s lab for a PhD. It sounded like a great opportunity on paper—the PI has an excellent academic track record, a strong publication list, and international collaborations. But I found myself hesitating. Why? Because I’ve seen how students in that lab don’t thrive. Despite the academic brilliance, many leave early or stay deeply unhappy due to the toxic environment. The mentor may be successful in research, but they fail to support their students beyond the bench. In STEM, especially during Master’s, PhD, and Postdoctoral stages, choosing the right mentor is everything. A good mentor is not just a scientist—you need someone who: Guides your research and your career, Encourages you to apply for awards, grants, and fellowships, Supports your mental and emotional well-being, Helps you grow into a confident, capable, and well-rounded professional. These young women, often first-generation learners, harbor aspirations and dreams in STEM fields, yet they face an array of challenges, including limited resources, minimal hands-on science experience, and formidable social and family barriers. As a mentor with my background, I believe I can make a significant difference in helping them understand their potential, navigate their careers, and continue higher studies or secure their dream jobs. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Establishing a strong rapport with my mentees based on empathy and understanding their rural background creates a sense of trust, allowing for open and honest communication. 𝟮. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: Organizing live interactive sessions with successful women STEM professionals exposes them to a myriad of opportunities, helping them make informed decisions. 𝟯. 𝗙𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀: From building weather stations to designing ways grow microbes using household items can ignite curiosity, imbibe scientific temperament, and enhance confidence. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿��: 𝟭. 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲: Initially, I underestimated their limited science exposure, which led to some confusion and frustration. Understanding their starting point was crucial for effective mentoring. 𝟮. 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵: At times, I unintentionally adhered to a one-size-fits-all approach, failing to consider their unique challenges and circumstances. Flexibility is key in mentoring diverse individuals. 𝟯. 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: Neglecting the influence of family and community expectations resulted in some mentees facing resistance and discouragement. Mentoring undergraduate girls from rural backgrounds in STEM is both a privilege and a responsibility. By building trust, nurturing aspirations, exposing them to opportunities, and offering practical learning experiences, my goal is to empower them to overcome limitations and pursue their dreams relentlessly. From High School in France to Purdue University: How Mentoring Made Me a Better Scientist Six months ago, I started my research project on micro-RNA therapy against bone cancer (osteosarcoma). In that same timeframe, I was also given a new role, mentoring Viyanshi Patodia, an Indian undergraduate spending her final semester at Purdue. At first, juggling mentorship, coursework, and a brand-new project seemed daunting. But step by step, I turned chaos into clarity, setting weekly experimental goals, breaking tasks into actionable steps, and immersing myself in an ever-growing repertoire of scientific articles 📚🔬. 💡 Along the way, I uncovered three key lessons, a trilogy of growth I didn’t see coming: 📚 Act I: The Surprise — Bidirectional Learning Mentorship is a two-way street. 1️⃣ You master ideas deeply enough to teach them. 2️⃣ You reframe them so they click for someone else. Sometimes, that meant dusting off my old textbooks and learning alongside my mentee. 🗂️ Act II: The Method — Clear Organization Being responsible for someone else's growth pushed me to level up my structure. · What are this week’s goals? · How do they translate into daily tasks? · What can I delegate and how do I teach her to take over those tasks? This mindset gave us clarity and fueled our progress, week after week. 💡 Act III: The Secret Sauce — Spark, Don’t Dictate Great mentorship isn’t about spoon-feeding information. It’s about igniting curiosity 🔍. I offered resources, she asked questions some that even sent me back to the literature. That virtuous cycle? Give Insight, Not Just Instructions Instead of telling your mentee what to do, explain why it works that way. Example: “Here’s why this ventilation design passed testing watch for this on future projects.” Tip: Create a “Behind the Scenes” moment during your week. Invite them into meetings, reviews, or decisions, even just for 10 minutes, to build their context. 🎯 2. Normalize Failure Out Loud Share the times you got it wrong. Be specific: “I once missed a tolerance by 0.3mm. It cost us a week, but I learned more than I did from success.” Tip: Build a ‘Failure File’ a shared space where you and your mentees log lessons learned from mistakes. Not shame, just growth. 👏 3. Speak Confidence Into Them Notice their strengths and say them out loud. “You’re always clear under pressure” or “Your ability to break down complexity is impressive.” Tip: Write your mentee a “Future You Note.” Describe them 2 years from now at their best. It sticks. It inspires. 🧭 4. Guide, Don’t Control Ask more than you tell: “What do you think would work here?” or “What solution do you lean toward?” Tip: Let them lead one small piece of a real-world task even if they fumble a bit. It’s a confidence accelerator. 🌱 5. Make Space for Growth, Not Perfection Schedule monthly ‘growth check-ins’ that aren't performance reviews just safe chats. Ask: “What’s stretched you lately?” “What’s something you want to try but haven’t yet?” Tip: Create a “Stretch Goal Bingo” together fun, scary but doable targets like: ☑️ Present at a team meeting ☑️ Shadow a senior engineer ☑️ Speak up when you disagree 💬 Final Word from me: Mentorship is not about having all the answers. Students seeing someone who looks like them - whether it is a tutor, a teacher, a mentor, or a coach - it matters. I know this because when I went to Michigan and wanted to take my first computer science class, I walked into a room on North Campus, and I was the only woman. It was 2000, and in a lecture hall of 100, I remember every person staring at me as I walked in, watched me take a seat, and then covertly looked at me for the next 48 minutes. I did this for two weeks. Then the professor pulled me aside and told me I should drop the class - I was a distraction, and did I really want to be in computer science? I wish I could tell you I stuck with the class. I wish I could tell you I said a not-nice word and got the highest score in the class. I didn't. I listened to him and I dropped the class. I changed my major and never took another computer science class at Michigan. (Honestly, it's still really bad - with women only being awarded 20% of comp sci degrees is a low water mark compared to the 1980s - another post here about why we are losing ground - another day) If you know me, you know that doesn't sound like something I would do. But I was 18; it mattered that I fit in. I was 2,000 miles from home, and he seemed caring and empathetic. I share this with you because there is currently much discussion about whether diversity matters in the STEM fields. If as a country, we should be investing in ensuring our scientists reflect the beautiful fabric of this country - rural, disabled, immigrant, gender, and racially diverse. The answer is yes. And if we don't in the age of AI and quantum, we will lose. It's the space race of our generation—and I want to remind us of all the hidden figures who got us there. And it's not just me - it's research. Check out the latest paper from some brilliant folks, who argue that we need to pay attention to this from a young age (long before college) and not just with teachers, but also with our entire education workforce. Insights at the midway point of the STEMinist Empowered Mentorship Program: 1. There is value in real life topic discussion that we should put more emphasis on - e.g. Financial Wellness, Navigating the Job Search, Navigating relationships. A big mistake for me was thinking I can figure it all out when I graduate. It’s our job as mentors to help those in the pipeline. It’s never too early to start these conversations. 2. We talk about non traditional paths but who defines “non-traditional”. There is no ‘traditional vs non traditional’ when it comes to your path. But would love to get opinions. To me, It’s about where you see your career and no “norm” should dictate that. 3. There is value in community and creating space to share experiences - there are common threads, lessons and support based on individual experiences that can be leveraged. The World Economic Forum shares devastating statistics: - Women represent 49.3% of employment in non-STEM fields but only 29.2% of the STEM workforce. - Early career attrition is significant, with many women leaving STEM roles within one year of graduating. - The leadership gap in STEM is bleak: women make up 29.4% of entry-level roles but just 12.4% of C-Suite executives. The STEM workforce is still not gender equal. As women in the field, it is our responsibility to make the environment more welcoming and inclusive. Thanks to Amazon and Women* In Science and Engineering (WISE) for this collaborative initiative that allows college students like me to mentor high school students and educate them about STEM fields. This was my second year mentoring, and I'm thrilled to share some inspiring success metrics: 📈 Awareness of STEM Careers: Before mentoring, only 13% of my mentees felt they had a good idea of what jobs fell into STEM categories. After six months, this number jumped to 56.4%! 🌟 Guidance and Support: The percentage of mentees who felt they had strong mentors increased from 24.1% to 56.4%. 💪 Confidence in Pursuing Dreams: Initially, 27.8% felt confident about pursuing their dreams, which rose to an impressive 69.2%. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive: - “I feel more comfortable with my possible future passions and goals” - "The robotics part was really fun I enjoyed it so much my cheeks started hurting from smiling." - "It helped me realize that it’s not as intimidating as it seems and that while it may be hard it’s possible." These results not only demonstrate the power of mentorship but also highlight the importance of providing practical, real-world exposure and support to the next generation of STEM leaders.
