    "Sleep on it" turns out to be more than folk wisdom. As we teach at The Brain Based Leader, sleep really does help your brain find solutions to problems, and the mechanism is one of the more interesting findings in sleep neuroscience. When you hit a real impasse on a hard problem and then go to sleep, something specific happens during REM. Your hippocampus is wildly active. Your amygdala is wildly active. Your ventromedial prefrontal cortex is keeping the emotional processing regulated. But one region in particular - the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex - switches off. That dorsolateral PFC is your brain's executive. During the day, it enforces logic, time, and the conventional rules of reality (what's allowed to happen, the laws of physics, etc.). It's why you can't quite let yourself entertain possibilities that don't make sense (e.g., that you can fly). It's a vital function for getting through the day. Vital functions aren't always helpful in the same way at all times. When the executive brain goes offline during REM sleep, the rest of the brain keeps running. Memory circuits fire. Emotion circuits fire. The brain fragments what you know, recombines it in unusual ways, and tries out possibilities - creative connections the waking brain would have ruled out as implausible or impossible. This is why Friedrich Kekulé figured out the structure of benzene in a dream after long hours working on the problem. It's why Otto Loewi won a Nobel Prize for an experimental design that came to him in his sleep. It's why Salvador Dalí deliberately fell asleep holding a spoon over a metal plate, so when the spoon dropped the noise would wake him from REM sleep, and he could paint the creative images his brain had just recombined. What most leaders end up doing is holding a third meeting about the same stalled question, or staying up late to grind through it. The grind isn't useless. It's part of the encoding work. But the breakthrough, when it actually arrives, is more likely to happen when your brain is in a different mode - like during REM sleep.     He followed the process perfectly and lost She questioned the process and won in seconds This is first principles thinking in action The man executed flawlessly but he solved the wrong problem. The woman won because she identified what actually mattered. The difference wasn't skill. It was how they defined the problem. Watch this game closely. A ball sits on top of stacked cups. Goal is to arrange all cups in a line. The man focuses on the constraint. Ball must stay on top. So he methodically places the cup with ball on each cup. One by one. Perfect adherence to what he thinks the rules require. The woman focuses on the goal. Arrange cups in a line. She removes the top cup with ball. Lines up remaining cups. Done. Same challenge. Radically different thinking. This is first principles versus process thinking in action. I see this constantly in fintech product development. Teams build elaborate authentication flows because that's how banking apps work. Meanwhile users abandon at signup because nobody asked whether complexity solves the actual problem. Teams add features methodically because the roadmap says so. Meanwhile competitors solve the user need with one-tenth the functionality. In payments, we inherited payment flows with seventeen steps. Each step solved a compliance requirement or edge case from years past. Nobody asked the first principles question. What does the user actually need to accomplish? When we redesigned from that question, we cut the flow to four steps. Compliance stayed intact. Conversion doubled. First principles thinking asks why before how. Why build this feature? Roadmap checkbox or user problem? Why twelve approval layers? Always been done or actual risk reduction? Why follow industry standards? Optimal or just familiar? Process thinking optimizes the existing path. First principles thinking questions whether you're on the right path.     I've never looked at travel as a break from work. For me, it's always been an extension of it. Every year, I make it a point to travel to different cities and countries. Not because I have a bucket list. But because every place teaches me something that no boardroom or spreadsheet ever can. A tiny café in Tokyo teaches me more about customer obsession than a dozen business books. A founder in Singapore changes how I think about distribution. A retail store in Seoul makes me question why we've accepted mediocrity back home. The more I travel, the more I realise something uncomfortable. That the best startup ideas don't appear out of thin air. They're often adaptations. If you only learn from people who think like you, build like you, and sell to people like you, You'll eventually build on yesterday. Every market has already solved a problem you're about to face. The question is: Did you travel far enough to notice it? You see a behaviour in one market. A product in another. A business model somewhere else. Then you ask yourself: "Could this work in India?" Some of the most exciting companies I've worked with were built by founders who didn't try to reinvent everything. They simply understood a problem deeply and adapted a proven insight to their own market. Travel also reminds me of something equally important. Every founder worries about growth. Every entrepreneur struggles with hiring. Every startup wonders whether they're moving fast enough. The challenges are surprisingly universal. The solutions rarely are. As an operator and investor, that's probably what I value most. Because sometimes the best investment insight doesn't come from a pitch deck. It comes from a conversation with someone you've just met, thousands of miles away. I've been fortunate to build businesses and work with founders across India, Southeast Asia, Japan and Europe. And every trip leaves me with the same feeling. The world moves much faster than our assumptions. That's why I never treat travel as an expense. It's one of the highest-return investments I've made in the way I think. Because in the end, The companies that survive aren't always built by the smartest founders.     GenAI won't kill critical thinking. Comfortable leaders will. AMLE 's "Critical Thinking in the Age of Generative AI," a 2025 systematic review, and Microsoft's survey all point to the same tension ➤ AI can sharpen your thinking—or slowly dull it. Here are 9 ways to stay sharp: 1️⃣ "Treat AI as a first draft, never a final say"  ↳ GenAI's confident tone tricks your brain into skipping evaluation. ✅ Act on it: Ban "copy–paste" from AI into decision-critical docs. Require one human edit plus rationale before anything AI-generated moves upward. 2️⃣ "Ask AI to argue against itself"  ↳ Questioning and comparison strengthen critical thinking. ✅ Act on it: Always follow one answer with: "Now, give me the strongest counterargument." Share that practice with your team as a standard operating rule. 3️⃣ "Separate speed from wisdom"  ↳ Fast answers feel good; wise answers feel uncomfortable first. ✅ Act on it: For decisions that feel "too easy" after AI, pause and ask: "What are we not seeing?" Use AI to surface opposing viewpoints and edge cases—not just best practices. 4️⃣ "Build 'social critical thinking,' not just solo analysis"  ↳ Challenge assumptions together. ✅ Act on it: In key meetings, assign one person "AI skeptic" and another "AI translator." End with: "What assumptions are we accepting because AI made them sound reasonable?" 5️⃣ "Use AI to find blind spots, not excuses"  ↳ Confidence in AI can reduce scrutiny; leaders can reverse that. ✅ Act on it: Ask, "Whose perspective is missing?" and use AI to simulate that viewpoint. Include ethical, cultural, or stakeholder perspectives as separate prompts. 6️⃣ "Turn AI mistakes into a leadership curriculum"  ↳ Reflective use of AI strengthens thinking. ✅ Act on it: Collect "AI near-miss" stories and discuss them in leadership meetings. Ask: "What almost went wrong? What saved us? What changes next time?" 7️⃣ "Make your own thinking visible"  ↳ Leadership thinking is contagious. ✅ Act on it: Narrate your process: "Here's what AI suggested. Here's how I challenged it. Here's the decision." Encourage your direct reports to model the same. 8️⃣ "Audit where you've gone on AI autopilot"  ↳ Over-reliance creeps in quietly. ✅ Act on it: List 3 areas where you now "trust" AI outputs without checking. For each, design one review step that reintroduces human judgment. 9️⃣ "Upgrade your questions, not just your tools"  ↳ Tools are only as powerful as the questions behind them. ✅ Act on it: Replace "What should we do?" with "Given A, B, C constraints, what are 3 non-obvious options?"     Most teams don’t have a talent problem. They have a challenge problem. It’s not that people aren’t smart, skilled, or hardworking. It’s that they play it too safe in conversations, avoid tough questions, and hesitate to push each other’s thinking. 👇 The result? Slow decisions, missed opportunities, and a team that feels collaborative but isn’t truly high-performing. A leadership team I worked with had all the right ingredients: experience, ambition, and expertise, but their discussions stayed surface-level. They weren’t failing, but they weren’t excelling either. So, we made some tweaks.  Not by forcing more meetings, but by shifting how they work together. Here are 6 practices you can also try: 1️⃣ Mental Model Mapping Instead of debating what to do, map out how each team member thinks about a challenge. Ask everyone to write down: - What assumptions they are making - What past experiences shape their views - What risks they foresee Comparing these “mental maps” exposes team blind spots and enhances collective intelligence. 2️⃣ Curiosity Round Before giving feedback, asking this question first: “What was your thought process behind this?”. It opens up constructive dialogue instead of triggering defensiveness. 3️⃣ "Energy Audit" Method Instead of assigning tasks based only on skills, tracking what energizes or drains each team member helps optimize workflows and prevent burnout. 4️⃣ "Mistake-Learning" Sprint Once a month, instead of analyzing success stories, pick a past team failure and collaboratively discuss: - What went right despite the failure? - What invisible factors played a role? - How would we approach it differently now? 5️⃣ Red Team vs. Blue Team For big decisions, split the team into: - The Red Team (critics) who try to poke holes in the idea - The Blue Team (defenders) who justify why it will work This forces teams to think through risks and opportunities instead of making rushed choices. 6️⃣ One Bold Experiment Encourage teams to propose and test one out-of-the-box idea every quarter, with permission to fail. - Frame it as a low-risk experiment rather than a big change - Assign a “learning lead” to document what works - Celebrate insights, not just outcomes This keeps teams innovative without fear of failure.     During my time as a Navy SEAL, precision and thorough analysis were not just practices but NECESSITIES! The "Five Whys" method exemplifies this approach outside the battlefield, presenting a clear path to problem-solving. Here's how it worked for the Lincoln Memorial's unexpected challenge: 1️⃣ Why is the memorial dirty?Because of bird droppings. 2️⃣ Why are there bird droppings?Birds are attracted to the area. 3️⃣ Why are birds attracted? They eat the spiders there. 4️⃣ Why are there spiders? Spiders eat the insects 5️⃣ Why are there insects? They're attracted to the lights left on at night. The solution? Adjust the lighting to reduce the insects to deter the spiders and birds, directly addressing the root of the cleanliness issue. This method isn't just for maintaining national monuments; it's a powerful tool for any leader or problem-solver in any field.     AI and Critical Thinking: A False Dilemma or a Wake-Up Call? A recent Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon study has gone viral with headlines proclaiming that relying on AI kills critical thinking. The idea that AI could be making us less intellectually agile is an alarming one. But as always, the reality is more nuanced than the headline suggests. The study highlights that users who leaned on AI-generated outputs tended to produce "a less diverse set of outcomes for the same task" compared to those who did not use AI. This has been interpreted as a deterioration of critical thinking. The fear is that AI is shaping human decision-making in a way that reduces independent thought and creative problem-solving. AI is a tool, and like any tool, its impact depends on how we use it. If we blindly accept AI-generated results without questioning or refining them, then yes, our cognitive abilities may atrophy over time. But if we leverage AI as a collaborator—challenging, iterating, and improving upon its suggestions—then it can actually enhance our thinking, not replace it. The key factor here is education and training. If professionals and students are taught to critically assess AI-generated outputs rather than passively accept them, then AI becomes a force multiplier for intelligence, not a replacement for it. - AI as a Thought Partner, Not a Dictator: Diversity in Thinking Comes from Human-AI Collaboration. The Real Danger Lies in Over-Reliance Without Understanding - Diversity in Thinking Comes from Human-AI Collaboration: AI tends to optimize for efficiency, which can sometimes mean converging on common solutions. Humans, however, can inject divergent thinking, cultural insights, and out-of-the-box creativity to balance this tendency. - The Real Danger Lies in Over-Reliance Without Understanding: If AI is treated as a "black box" where results are blindly trusted, then critical thinking erodes. But if it is used as a brainstorming assistant, research tool, or an idea amplifier, then it enhances productivity without diminishing cognitive skills. Rather than debating whether AI kills critical thinking, we should focus on AI literacy. The ability to understand, question, and refine AI outputs will define the winners and losers in the age of automation. Companies, universities, and governments should invest in training professionals not just to use AI, but to think alongside it. The best leaders of tomorrow will be those who know when to trust AI, when to challenge it, and when to override it with human intuition and experience. AI doesn’t inherently make us less intelligent. It amplifies the thinking patterns we already have. If we train ourselves to use AI wisely, it can become a tool that sharpens our intellect rather than dulling it. The challenge is not AI itself—it’s how we integrate it into our workflows, decision-making, and education systems. AI is not the enemy of critical thinking; it is a test of it.

    HUGE NEWS EVERYONE: OpenAI just launched ChatGPT Enterprise. This is a significant milestone in the intersection of AI and the corporate world. Marketed as an enterprise-grade solution with advanced security, data protection, and unlimited access to GPT-4 functionalities, it is projected to fundamentally reshape work processes within organisations. However, this technological leap raises nuanced legal issues, particularly in the realms of data protection, intellectual property (IP), and the forthcoming AI Act’s foundation model regulatory obligations. ChatGPT Enterprise assures users of robust data protection, stipulating that the model is not trained on business-specific data and that all conversations are encrypted both in transit and at rest. OpenAI claims the platform's SOC 2 compliance adds an additional layer of trust in its security protocols. However, from a legal perspective, questions arise around data ownership and control. OpenAI promises not to train the model on user-specific data, but what about when a company fine-tunes the model on its own data - what are the data protection considerations then? GDPR imposes stringent requirements on data usage, sharing, and deletion, which businesses employing ChatGPT Enterprise must consider. ChatGPT Enterprise's capability to assist in creative work, coding, and data analysis poses tricky questions in relation to ownership. For example, if the AI generates a piece of written content or code, who owns the copyright? The current legal framework, which traditionally recognises human authorship, may not be fully equipped to navigate the nuances of AI-generated IP. The US District Court last week ruled that AI generated work cannot be copyrighted. What if you as a company are engaging third parties to develop code and other work output - if they are using ChatGPT enterprise to generate the outputs, there may be nothing protected by copyright, and no IP rights to assign to you. How will you address that? Then there’s Article 28b of the forthcoming AI Act which imposes strict regulatory obligations on providers of certain foundation models (like GPT4). If you finetune the model enough, that could potentially make YOU the provider with all the regulatory obligations that could bring. And if it doesn’t, you still may have user obligations. Mass adoption of AI across various sectors could draw scrutiny by competition regulators. Could OpenAI’s ubiquity in over 80% of Fortune 500 companies potentially raise concerns about market competition and behaviour? The debut of ChatGPT Enterprise marks an inflection point in the deployment of AI in enterprise environments. While its promise of improved productivity and robust data protection is enticing, businesses and legal experts must pay heed to the complex legal landscape it interacts with. Comprehensive regulation and judicious legal practice are critical in balancing technological advancement with the protection of individual and corporate rights.
