Calyx (カリュクス, Karyukusu?) is a non-playable character in Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, introduced in the patch 7.2, "Seekers of Eternity". He serves as the main antagonist of post-Dawntrail storyline.
History[]
Early life[]
Calyx lived in Alexandria within the Ninth. Four hundred years ago, he was a brilliant scientist who mastered electrope technology and was considered a genius despite his young age. During the Storm Surge, he founded a scientific collective called the Preservation with the purpose of preserving Alexandria from the ravages of the war. Through his research, the Preservation created many technological marvels.
When Alexandrian Queen Sphene contracted a serious case of levin sickness, which would have led to her death, Calyx and the Preservation preserved her within an electrope casket, where she was kept in cold stasis, alive and not aging. Calyx was also instrumental in creating the dome that sealed Alexandria off from the lightning-filled atmosphere, which had consumed the Ninth. The Preservation labored to save Alexandria by constructing Everkeep atop the old Alexandria castle.
The research into electrope allowed Calyx and the Preservation to create the Endless, simulacrums created from people's memories. The first Endless was Queen Sphene, all for the purpose of maintaining the status quo, as the Preservation could not release the real Sphene from her casket without killing her. The Endless Sphene continued ruling Alexandria, while Calyx and the Preservation created regulators, which allowed creation of more Endless and also preserved Alexandrians by allowing them to use soul cells to revive them should they die in an accident or in a fight. Regulators would erase memories of the deceased, causing Alexandrians to become unaware of the nature of death.
At some point, Calyx and the Preservation disappeared. Calyx eventually discarded his flesh and became an Endless, concluding that mortal vessels for souls were outdated, proceeding to create a utopia of Endless. He had some kind of control over the Endless Sphene, which led into Alexandria fusing with the Source when Zoraal Ja entered the Ninth and became the King of Resolve. After the deaths of both Zoraal Ja and Endless Sphene, Calyx created a simulant Sphene to further his plan in creating more Endless and, according to his view, the next stage of human evolution.
Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail[]
To fulfill his plan, Calyx needed the interdimensional key, which the Endless Sphene handed to the Warrior of Light after she was defeated. He sent the simulant Sphene to coax the people of Alexandria by acquiring neo-regulators to become Endless.
Characteristics[]
Appearance[]
Calyx is pale-skinned man wearing a lab coat and gray trousers and white shoes. A tube is attached into his neck.
Personality[]
Calyx appears emotionless. He goes into every length to achieve his goals, even killing innocent people. He develops a personal interest in the Warrior of Light, yet he seeks to eliminate them and acquire the interdimensional key from their possession by any means necessary. He has come to loathe mortality.
Behind the scenes[]
Calyx appears to be inspired from Garland from Final Fantasy IX whose goal was to direct Terra's fusion with Gaia to preserve the fading Terran population. Similarly, Calyx attempts to preserve Alexandria's current status by turning Alexandrians into Endless.
Etymology[]
The calyx is the outermost whorl of flower parts, comprising the sepals. It was adopted from the Latin calyx, which is derived from the Ancient Greek κᾰ́λῠξ (kắlŭx) meaning "a covering of a flower or fruit".
