Pepin is a non-playable character in Final Fantasy XIV. He appears during the Physical Ranged DPS role quests in the Dawntrail expansion.

History[]

Pepin and Avenel were born and raised in Ul'dah. As they struggled to survive, Chalteaufite, claiming to be a merchant, appeared before them. Chalteaufite said he was just like the citizens exploited by the rich and powerful and promised to protect them using the power of the Steelhog Vessel, an artifact that made them invincible. Like other citizens, Avenel and Pepin were deluded by Chalteaufite's promises and began to follow him. At first, they pretended to be merchants so that we could exploit vulnerable caravans, but soon they were forced to join him in raids. Those who disagreed with Chalteaufite's actions were treated as traitors and punished using threats and violence.[1]

When Chalteaufite disguised himself as a merchant to try to ambush the Warrior of Light, Avenel and Pepin also disguised themselves to accompany him. They approached the Resistance commander in Porta Praetoria claiming to have heard the rumors of the attack and said they wanted to offer themselves as bait in a place where bandits usually attack. Arriving at the entrance to a ravine, Avenel and Pepin chose to stay behind while the Warrior of Light went ahead to investigate the crime scene. The Warrior of Light was attacked in ambush, but the bandits were easily defeated. Upon returning and reporting the ambush to Avenel and Pepin, they are surprised that the brigands have been defeated and contact Chalteaufite, who soon arrives at their location with the commander of Porta Praetoria and Ceetol Ja. While the member of the Resistance arrested the bandits, Chalteaufite said goodbye.[2]

Avenel and Pepin accompanied Chalteaufite when he scolded the bandit for going straight to their lair with the possibility of being followed. While they were talking, Kaqool Ja discovered that Ceetol Ja and the Warrior of Light were listening in and confronted them. Chalteaufite used the power of the vessel on Kaqool Ja while he and the others escaped.[3]

Now knowing that Chalteaufite controls most of his henchmen through intimidation, Ceetol Ja suggested making contact with the Avenel and Pepin. Once they located the two in Ala Gannha, they soon revealed the true nature of their relationship with Chalteaufite. Repentant for their actions, the two merchants offer to help convince others to leave the gang and recover the artifact, a proposal that Ceetol Ja readily accepts.[1]

Chalteaufite made a speech to his subordinates saying that after looting the goods and spreading chaos in Ala Mhigo, he had invested the funds in restoring and upgrading discarded magitek weaponry. Now Chalteaufite could start the next part of his plan and take control of Ala Mhigo. The speech was interrupted by Kaqool Ja who had found out about Chalteaufite's lies and demanded that he hand over the Vessel. Chalteaufite declared that Kaqool Ja was a traitor and used the power of the Vessel on his subordinates to confront Kaqool Ja. Kaqool Ja was defeated and left on the ground, sympathizers of Avenel and Pepin showed up to rescue and tend to Kaqool Ja's wounds.[4]

Avenel and Pepin fled from Chalteaufite, they reveal that Chalteaufite had already left to conquer the Royal Palace of Ala Mhigo. After Chalteaufite was defeated and arrested by the Ala Mhigan Resistance, Avenel and Pepin also turned themselves in to pay for the crimes they had committed.[5]
