I've subscribed to the free Ubuntu Pro service and have Livepatch running (MacBook Pro 10,1, Ubuntu 24.04).

Livepatch says all good, but Settings, System, Software Updates shows stuff like kernel components apparently due for update.

Is this a scope-of-service or timing issue, or do I need to regularly check Settings, System, Software Updates as well as relying on Livepatch to ensure the OS remains current?

I'm also assuming I'll still need to rely on App Centre, Manage and perhaps CLI deb tools for software I've installed or that came from those sources with Ubuntu.

Anyone have a simplified overview or link to some reading to help a new user navigate & configure?

The image illustrates what brings me here today. Happy to supply further info if required.

  • The Pro service is no substitute for regular updates. Commented Nov 5, 2025 at 20:33
  • You should continue to update your computer at regular interval. You may enable unattended-upgrades if you think that is the best for you. Commented Nov 6, 2025 at 0:37

There is nothing unusual in your output.

The default settings of Ubuntu Desktop provide a complete, safe, and secure system with regular automatic security updates. Our advice for new users is to rely upon the Software Updater tool that came with your system. That's why it is there.

  • Security updates are entirely automatic by default. Unless you have changed the settings, security updates will occur without prompting. This is a key feature of Ubuntu.

  • Bugfix updates are not automatic by default, since some users want control over when to install these updates. These are the updates you get prompted for.

You don't need to "regularly check" anything. Software Update will prompt you when you need to approve a set of updated packages.

Ubuntu Pro provides some additional and valuable services (including Livepatch), but is not required. Pro does not replace nor add new features to the Software Updater tool. Systems without Pro are still safe and secure. The use of Pro services is entirely optional.
