Because I encrypted the drive and I'm already asked to enter a password at system boot, I wondered what downsides could arise if I check the 'automatic login' option for my user, as this would streamline accessing the computer, having to enter just 1 instead of 2 passwords every single time. Thank you.

That should not work: you can not use automatic login with encryption During install autom. logon is disabled when selecting encryption. That should also be the case when you want to set it afterwards. Commented Feb 26 at 14:46
  • I checked it out and the option is available Commented Feb 26 at 15:13
  • But does it work? I doubt it and would claim is is a security bug if it does :) Commented Feb 26 at 15:26
  • @Rinzwind "But does it work?" yes (25.10+FDE+TPM). "security bug " it can be considered security issue in my case (where root is unlocked automatically). It is not security issue in the OP case where owner's presence is verified before root can be unlocked. Commented Feb 26 at 18:21
  • You are right. When login Ubuntu says there's a mismatch between passwords. Thank you Commented Feb 26 at 21:12

The downside is: it does not work. When setting an encryption password, then checking auto-login to skip the request of the login password, a prompt warns that 'password no longer matches deposit linux' when restarting the system. I had the assumption that encryption and login access where completely unrelated processes but I was wrong.

@OrganicMarble I think the phrase 'password no longer matches deposit linux' is a clunky way of saying the system's vault is locked, and the automated handshake failed, however I would need to get confirmation from dm29 before I would permit myself to edit this answer. Commented Mar 1 at 6:12
