I just tried the Beta version of the "Questions" page, and have noticed a fairly straightforward bug with keyboard navigation and scrolling.

I use keyboard navigation a lot, but the up arrow, down arrow, page up and page down keys are initially broken -- I can't use them to scroll down in the list of questions.

I think the problem here is that you have two separate scrolling panels -- the question panel and that other panel thing on the left. Because I need to use large fonts, the other panel also gets a scrollbar, and so Firefox doesn't know which one to scroll.

Please don't break such basic keyboard navigation features. For those of us who have multiple accessibility issues it's important for them to work in a standard way.

To whomever voted to close: should I have broken this into three questions -- one for the keyboard navigation bug, one for the alignment bug, and one for the other subjective reactions? Commented Feb 25 at 21:32

OK, I'll go ahead and split up the question. Commented Feb 25 at 22:10
  • We can't seem to reproduce this (or your other bug) internally. What's your browser setup? Do you have any plugins that might interfere with resource loading? Commented 2 days ago
  • @Slate - I am using Firefox with an ad blocker and third party cookies blocked, would that matter? Also I have "experiments" disabled in my profile. But temporarily enabling experiments didn't fix the problem. Commented 2 days ago
  • @Slate - the scrolling bug only happens when the fonts are just large enough that the left-hand panel and question panel both have scroll bars. If they are small enough then the left hand panel doesn't get a scroll bar and keyboard scrolling works. If they are even larger the left-hand panel gets positioned below the question panel and keyboard scrolling works. It's only when they are side-by-side, both with scrollbars, that there is a problem. Also, be sure not to click anywhere in the window. Just reload then press the down arrow. Commented 2 days ago
  • This happens every time you access the site? Commented 2 days ago
  • @Slate - It happens when, using Firefox, I do: 1) Ctrl+N to open a new window. 2) Type https://beta.stackoverflow.com/questions in the URL bar. 3) Press the down arrow key. The "questions" panel should scroll down, but does not. Commented 2 days ago

Got it, actually I can reproduce this myself. Thanks for the extra info! Commented 2 days ago
  • You're welcome. As for the other, text alignment, problem, perhaps it's related to caching or some other stale content on my side? Maybe it will resolve itself if I restart everything (which isn't convenient for me to do just now). Commented 2 days ago
  • I haven't been able to reproduce that one and I don't know anyone who has either. My guess is that it's transient, which I'll grant could still be an issue, but that might end up in [status-norepro]. Commented 2 days ago
  • @dbc On the classic Stack Overflow site, if you hit Tab on the keyboard, it opens up an option to Skip to main content. If we implemented that, would that support your workflow? Thanks! Commented 2 days ago

@setman - honestly not really. If I go to reddit or twitter or "classic" stack overflow or google.com/search?q=down+arrow+keyboard+navigation or some news site like latimes.com or some tech doc site like learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/standard/serialization/… or wherever, then down arrow scrolls down through their content. Having to tab through multiple frames just to scroll down through the site's content seems very idiosyncratic and unnecessary when it has worked consistently for nearly 30 years at this point.
