I had the opportunity to test GLIWA T1 4.0 recently. Thanks to Cristian Garzón and Germano Brunacci for the oportunity. GLIWA T1 4.0 is not “new.” It’s just less friction. And that matters. And honestly: it’s hard to improve an already great tool without just adding noise. This feels like the opposite, same fundamentals, fewer steps, faster loops. What stood out in my quick test: - Overall it feels faster (less waiting, quicker iterations) - A new page that puts the key information in one place, no more tab switching between cont / scope / … just to keep context - A very practical one: T1.flex across all functions at once, no more manual work selecting each function, starting measurements, repeating the same setup cycle Why this matters in real projects: timing/resource closure isn’t blocked by “lack of data”, it’s blocked by workflow friction. Reducing manual steps increases cadence and makes it easier to keep integration disciplined. What’s your biggest time sink today in timing analysis: setup/selection, running measurements, or turning results into decisions?

This week, we started a new course at Universidade Federal de Itajubá, IESTI05 - Edge Machine Learning Systems Engineering. IESTI05 is a 15-week undergraduate course designed to teach students how to implement AI systems on edge devices, specifically using Raspberry Pi platforms. Every quarter, this EV charging infrastructure company in Portugal spends 40+ hours on the same task: Going through hundreds of invoices, one by one, extracting every physical item purchased, building an inventory list. They need to send it to the Tax Authorities. Invoices arrive constantly. Email, different suppliers, different formats. No predictability. By the end of the quarter, someone has to reconstruct months of purchases from a chaotic inbox. It's not a hard problem intellectually. It’s just the kind of work that makes skilled people feel a bit dumb Here's what we're building for them: 1. Inbox monitoring — Every invoice that arrives gets picked up automatically. 2. AI extraction — Parse the document, identify physical items (not services, not fees—actual inventory), pull quantities and descriptions. 3. Structured inventory — Append to a proper database. No more spreadsheets that break when someone forgets a column. 4. Conversational interface — The owner can just ask: "How many 22kW charging units do we have?" or "What did we buy from [supplier] last month?" 5. Export for compliance — One click to generate the report for Uncle Sam (well, the portuguese version of “him”). The work that used to take a week now takes minutes. Plus, the owner stops loosing sleep over a messy inventory. Seriously, it’s the kind of thing we can easily solve people. More updates as we ship it.

The "holy trinity of smart manufacturing" was used by Francisco Almada Lobo Almada Lobo, from Critical Manufacturing to describe manufacturing data platforms, MES and IoT connectivity. It provides the data foundation required by application of AI in manufacturing according to this article* from Automation World about Almada's keynote at the MES & Industry 4.0 Summit. Today, #MES software offers extensive possibilities for customization and escalation, but operates above all on static environment and fixed rules. But manufacturing processes can not be considered static anymore, since global economic issues and supply chain disruptions lead to higher product customization, leading to inefficiencies that traditional MES architectures can struggle to address. The solution proposed is "augmenting MES systems with AI agents that can learn, adapt and make intelligent decisions in real-time". But going through an important further development in this production automation layer: developing robust data and architectural strategies to support them. "Traditional, transaction manufacturing systems using relational databases were never never designed for AI workloads, which require massive, diverse datasets spanning images, text, logs and sensor feeds. AI also needs historical data and access to live stream processing data for real-time responses" The big takeaway for me is that MES as we know it will not be enough in the near future. The ability to combine MES with AI agents will decide who can truly adapt their factories to a world that refuses to stand still. It’s clear that manufacturers need to start thinking beyond static MES and move toward architectures that can actually learn and adapt. Building that foundation now will make the difference between keeping up and falling behind. This shows how MES is shifting from being a system of record into a system of intelligence. The ones who prepare their data, architecture and mindset for this shift will be the ones shaping the next generation of #smartmanufacturing.

Credentials shouldn’t depend on PDFs. And verification shouldn’t take days. NOVA IMS is now issuing academic credentials as Verifiable Credentials, using blockchain technology aligned with W3C standards, OpenID, and the EBSI pilot. It’s the first production rollout of its kind in Portugal, placing NOVA IMS among Europe’s early adopters. Students can store credentials in their own digital wallet and share proof of a qualification in seconds with employers and institutions – who can verify authenticity automatically, reducing friction and fraud risk. The NOVA IMS Academic Credential Portal was developed by the Nova Blockchain Lab at NOVA IMS, led by Joana Rodrigues Pereira, with development by Francisco Ribeiro. NOVA IMS Dean, Miguel de Castro Neto, highlights its value for students and employers: “As a public school, we have a responsibility to lead solutions that bring real value to the country and to higher education.
