When I first received my instruction I thought I may have to shoot someone, however I quickly realised I was simply to make a gesture. On explaining it to my friend, they asked what I was to do with the branch.

What was I instructed to do?

$\begingroup$ @bobble I did, although it did occur to me that it likely isn't original thought, but a search for a similar riddle came up with nothing. $\endgroup$ Commented Aug 29 at 14:06

You were instructed to bow.

You thought you had to kill with a bow (i.e., shoot an arrow). You then realized you were supposed to bow (a gesture where you bend the body). Your friend also misinterpreted the instruction, believing the word was bough. While the latter two words sound the same, the first sounds slightly different. However, they are all very close in sound.

You were asked to "hold up the target"

You initially thought you were going to have to rob your local Target, however the instruction giver then gave you a target to hold up for a party game. Your friend was also concerned, asking what you would do at the local Target branch when you were holding it up.
