I read the beginning of a story at least 10 years ago (I don't think I ever finished it) where a ship was traveling through space. Some (or all?) of the people were in stasis pods and when they woke up, they found one person dead inside pod. Further investigation found that he had multiple holes in his body. They figured out it was a worm (alien?) that got inside him.

Then the only other part I remember vaguely is someone else gets infected, and most people step back and try and keep away. But one person reaches out a hand to help, and the worm visibly jumps to new person? Or maybe jumps to finger? And I think someone else cuts that finger off really quickly trying to stop it from invading?

That "scene" has stuck with me for a long time, but I can't remember what book it was from.

I'm going to propose Destination Unknown published in 2001, and written by K. A. Applegate, the author of the Animorphs book series. This is the second book in her Remnants series. The ship was sent out because an asteroid was going to hit the Earth. I do not have the book and cannot quote it, but the passengers had been in suspended animation, and I'm pretty sure the episode with the worms described above is in there. The cover of the book shows a living person riddled with holes.

Thank you! This is it exactly, I read the Animorphs books growing up so I probably branched to other books by author. Plus worm being green was what I pictured in my head when describing it, but I didn't think to add it. Thinking about when I read the Animorphs, it could be closer to 20 years ago I read this book (which explains why I was having such a hard time remembering details). user14111, I appreciate the quotes too. I wouldn't have been able to confirm with just the title, but those quotes are exactly what I remember reading. I'm glad with both of your help I finally found the answer Commented Sep 22 at 18:13
