There was a book I read around 2017 that I'm trying to find again without any luck. There was a virus or an infection that caused people to mutate/become zombies. It could have been an alien virus, but I don't really remember. What I am sure of is at the end of the first book, it turns out that the world didn't end and that it was just quarantined to an area in the United States. So the male and female protagonists manage to escape.

What baffles me is that I swear there was a character who was an animal that got infected (cat?) that could talk. I might be confusing two different books but I've tried most everything without luck. I'm pretty sure that it had a colon in the name, or at least had a fairly long one.

Hi, welcome to SF&F. Do you happen to recall the cover art? Was it a physical book or an e-book? Commented Mar 23 at 15:56
  • It was an e-book, though I don't remember anything about the cover art. Commented Mar 23 at 17:03

  • I don't think this was it. It was a part of a series of books, not just a stand alone one. Thank you though. Commented Mar 23 at 19:03

Yeah that's the trouble with e-books, other than when you first open it, once you start reading you almost never see the cover again. But with HB or PB every time you pick it up you see the cover. The cover image becomes strongly associated with the book. Commented Mar 24 at 2:12
