I am a bit confused on the 180 day period rules.

I have a UK passport and I am planning to go to Hungary for a few days, and then return home for 2 weeks. After that, I would like to go to France for a few days. Can I leave & re-enter the Schengen area in this case?

Or, once I leave Hungary, do I have to wait for the 90/180 to reset before I can enter France? I read somewhere I have to start counting from when I leave the area, so does the 90 days allowance end as soon as I leave the first country?

Yes, you can leave and re-enter the Schengen Area (e.g., go from the UK → Hungary -> UK -> France) as long as you haven’t exceeded 90 days in the past 180 days in total across all Schengen countries combined. You do not have to wait for a "reset" just because you left once. The 90/180 rule means one can spend up to 90 days in any 180-day period within the Schengen Area (it's a rolling window).

In case OP doesn't know what is meant by a rolling window, it means this: for every single day that you want to stay in the Schengen Area, you need to check whether you have exceeded 90 days in the 180 day period which ends on that day. As long as all the days that you want to stay pass this series of tests, then you are fine. Also, as a corner case, you do not count any days where you were exercising free movement rights (this can be relevant to family members of EU citizens). Commented Oct 24 at 9:37
