Kris Moon shared thisThis was a fun one! a21Kris Moon shared thisActivation Recap Alert! What an incredible weekend bringing the House of NU to life during the Miami Grand Prix. It was an absolute pleasure partnering with Nubank and Creative Artists Agency to conceptualize, design, fabricate, program, and manage a fully immersive multi-day brand experience in the heart of Wynwood. House of Nu featured the iconic NU purple race suits and authentic Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team F1 car components, an interactive virtual race suit try on experience and an exclusive VIP Q&A with George Russell! Every detail was designed to create meaningful engagement and unforgettable moments for guests throughout race weekend. What made this activation especially exciting was the opportunity to produce it within our own dedicated venue footprint in Wynwood allowing us to fully control the guest journey, creative environment, and operational execution from start to finish. At a21 Brand Experiences, we specialize in turning bold ideas into high-impact experiential campaigns anywhere in the country from cultural moments and sporting events to large-scale consumer activations, VIP hospitality, and branded environments. With 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching Miami and major cultural moments continuing to shape the experiential landscape, we’re actively partnering with brands, agencies, and marketing teams looking to create standout experiences that drive connection, conversation, and brand relevance. Kris Moon shared thisThe question I asked myself every day during my time at the James Beard Foundation was simple: does this advance the mission and improve our world? I still ask that question in much of my work and it's why I said yes when KOPU Water founders, Justin Mahy and Mindy Mahy asked me to come on as an advisor to KŌPŪ Water, their family run business. The US food and beverage industry is extraordinary: more diverse, more innovative, more worth celebrating than most people know. Part of what drew me to KŌPŪ is that it's a product that belongs in that story. Oregon Cascades spring water. Aluminum packaging. Genuinely sustainable. Built here, not imported. The independent restaurant community I've spent my career working with deserves a premium water option that doesn't compromise on either quality or values. That's KŌPŪ. Excited to help tell their story and to bring them into the rooms and events where they belong. More soon. In the meantime, tell them “hello” and get yourself a KOPU Water while you’re at it.

Kris Moon reposted thisKris Moon reposted thisWe are proud to announce a new partnership between a21 and Warren Moore Events (WME)! After nearly 20 years of working alongside Dale Moore and his team, this partnership brings together WME’s design and fabrication expertise with a21’s full-service execution and operational strength to deliver immersive brand experiences from concept through completion. What does that look like in action? Through this partnership, brands will have access to: • Fully custom fabrication and scenic builds • Branded rental and modular activation systems • Activation design, themed environments, and immersive footprints • Mobile and pop-up production • End-to-end logistics, installation, and on-site management • Integrated culinary, beverage, and spirits programming A recent example of this work includes King’s Hawaiian at the Los Angeles Wine & Food Festival, EEEEEATSCON, and the New York City Wine and Food Festival, where we designed and built custom environments that blended physical build with culinary storytelling and guest interaction. This partnership marks the beginning of an exciting next chapter. We are excited about the bold, immersive experiences we will build together alongside WME. Fancy a collaboration? Contact us!

If anyone has an extra ticket they can’t use, I’ll happily buy it at face value and make a donation to the food-related charity of your choice. Kris Moon liked thisKris Moon liked thisMarquee Development served as a Gold Sponsor of last week's Sports Business Journal DRIVE, joining industry leaders for conversations central to our work. One message was clear: the fan experience extends far beyond game day. Mixed-use districts create opportunities for year-round engagement, but successful destinations must reflect their market, audience, and surrounding community. AI was another consistent theme, with organizations exploring how the technology can better leverage existing information and create new opportunities for innovation. Our own AI Task Force, led by Rachel Maguire, is actively exploring practical applications across the firm. It was valuable to hear how others are approaching this evolving technology. Our Senior Vice President of Marketing & Commercial Strategy, Megan Cantwell, also joined the panel, “Year-Round Revenue Hubs: Optimizing Programming, Staffing & Fan-First Experiences,” bringing Marquee Development’s firsthand experience developing and operating sports-anchored mixed-use districts to the conversation. Thank you to Sports Business Journal for facilitating these valuable industry discussions.

Kris Moon liked thisKris Moon liked thisAfter 3 incredible, adventurous, and completely unforgettable years with a21, I’m officially opening a new chapter in my career.🍷🍴 It’s hard to put into words just how grateful I am for my time at a21. For the experiences, the opportunities, the people, the rooms I was lucky enough to be in, and all of the moments that made these 3 years one wild ride. I had the opportunity to have a hand in bringing back Pebble Beach Food & Wine, plan the inaugural When We Gather Food & Wine Festival for Dwyane Wade, explore historic wine caves in Napa Valley, produce events in some truly incredible places, work alongside some of the best chefs and partners in the industry, and experience the kind of behind-the-scenes moments that make you fall even more in love with this crazy industry. But beyond the events themselves, I’m most grateful for the people. The incredibly talented, hardworking, hilarious, and passionate people who make the magic happen and who made even the longest days worth it. I learned so much from each of you, and I’ll carry those lessons, friendships, and memories with me wherever I go. a21 taught me how to bring an idea to life, how to work hard and play hard, how to find the magic behind the curtain, and how lucky I am to get to do what I love for a living. I wouldn’t trade this chapter for the world. I’ll always look back on my time at a21 with an immense amount of pride, gratitude, and fondness. Thank you for an unforgettable 3 years. 🤍 And now, onto the next adventure. 🥂

Kris Moon liked thisKris Moon liked thisLast week, I wrote about a nonprofit hiring a full-time Executive Director with a $45,000 salary. The post understandably struck a chord. It also ruffled some feathers and while I expected that, I’m pretty surprised at the angle those folks came from. I know that nonprofits have limited resources. I know that organizations are punished for having high “overhead” ratios (believe me, I once had my salary CUT because the org was concerned about their overhead ratio). You might be a founding ED who has never taken a salary. You might be unemployed right now and think $45,000 is better than nothing. I hear that. I really do. But people, whether they work for a nonprofit or anywhere else, deserve to make a living wage and in the case of this particular position, that salary falls far below the poverty level for the area. It isn’t about paying corporate salaries, it’s about paying a wage people can live on. There are other models organizations can explore that don’t hinge on paying people below poverty levels. In the meantime, let’s stop calling out the folks bringing attention to this issue and instead start calling out the private foundations that refuse to pay for staffing. Because the best way for organizations to sustain their work for the future is by investing in the people doing the work. And as long as this sector relies on philanthropy, it’s on philanthropy to stop punishing that investment.

Kris Moon liked thisThank you Mayor Whitmire for your leadership to make this project a reality!Kris Moon liked thisThis vision started years ago when, as a State Senator, I helped pass legislation that created the Sports Authority and funded Houston’s ballparks. We knew the impact major facilities can have on our economy. That’s why I also helped pass legislation to fund the George R. Brown Convention Center expansion. We’re already seeing results, with sales leads up 30% and major events secured in the years ahead. More conventions mean more visitors, more business for Houston, more jobs and more revenue for our city. We’ll continue making sure this signature project stays on time and on budget. Among those sales are four of the project’s signature rooftop Barn residences, including a $19 million residence that is the highest-priced home to go under contract in Steamboat in 2026. “Steamboat stood out to us because of its long-term vision and the thoughtful way the community has approached growth,” said Eric Nordness, Managing Principal of Marquee Development. “The strength of the residential market reinforces our conviction in the destination, and this financing gives us the capital to bring The Stockman forward with a partner that shares our confidence in the project and its long-term potential.” The combination of institutional capital and residential sales momentum underscores the strength of The Stockman’s positioning in the market. The project will introduce 95 ski-in, ski-out private residences and a 59-room Auberge Collection hotel, pairing direct mountain access with Auberge’s signature hospitality and service. Kris Moon liked thisKris Moon liked thisThe shortest Chief of Staff role I ever held taught me the most about how I interview now. Earlier in my career, I took a CoS role that looked ideal on paper. Strategy and operations heavy. Coaching executives. Partnering with finance and operations on everything the CEO didn't have time to track. Within two weeks, I understood two things. The people who created the role and the leader I was supporting did not agree on what that leader needed. And the leader did not want the role at all. Requests for information and stakeholder time were deferred. Suggestions on operating cadence were politely acknowledged and set aside. The harder I pushed to do the job as scoped, the more my work drifted toward calendars, travel, and expense tracking. That work matters. It was also already being done, and done well, by the CEO's executive assistant. I left well before the engagement was set to end. Staying would have meant working against how I believe this job should be done. And in a profession as small as ours, that kind of compromise follows you. On my way out, that EA, who had become a friend, apologized to me. Not for my leaving, but because they saw I had never been allowed to do the job I was brought in to do. It would be easy to tell this as a story about a difficult leader. It isn't. It's a story about who I didn't ask. I had interviewed with the CEO. I had heard a yes. But a leader can agree to a role for many reasons, and agreeing to it is not the same as wanting it. I asked one person and took the answer at face value. So when I interview for a CoS role now, I don't only meet the principal. I ask to speak with at least two of their direct reports and their EA. I ask each of them the same two questions: What will this person make possible for you that isn't possible today? How do you picture them actually doing that? The first question gets everyone imagining the role already filled. The second tells me whether anyone has thought about how this person will work with the principal and team week to week. A strong answer sounds like: "We'll meet once or twice a week on X, Y, and Z, and you'll independently own A, B, and C." A weaker one sounds like: "Handle the little things slipping off my plate and keep me accountable to the big ones." That's not a red flag. Call it a beige flag. It tells me the role hasn't been designed yet, and designing it from scratch with a leader who is already stretched thin rarely outlasts their patience. And if the answers describe work an EA already owns, we have a mismatch. Better for everyone to find that out before day one. The Chief of Staff title covers a wide range of jobs right now. It's why the role keeps having to explain itself. When the title can't define the role, the interview has to. Leaders considering a CoS: how would you answer those two questions today? Fellow CoS: what question tells you whether a principal truly wants the role filled? #ChiefOfStaff #Leadership #Hiring

Recently, after 34 years in fundraising, I’ve put a name to something I’ve been doing for decades — but hadn’t fully articulated. I’m a campaign architect. For years, I described my work as leading events or growing programs. But what I’ve really done — especially at scale — is design the blueprint that allows revenue to grow sustainably. I took the national lead of March for Babies just after the 2008–09 financial crisis, inheriting a nearly $100 million peer-to-peer program at a moment of systemic disruption. Corporate partners were recalibrating. Participation patterns were shifting. Field teams were under pressure. That experience reshaped how I think about growth. Mission resonance matters — enormously. (It’s a major reason some organizations continue to outperform.) But mission alone isn’t enough. Resilience lives in the architecture: • Revenue diversification • Corporate integration • Volunteer leadership depth • Digital infrastructure • Field alignment • Participant value proposition • Executive decision-making under pressure Shocks don’t create structural weakness — they reveal it. They also reveal structural strength. If the architecture is sound, growth can be rebuilt — even accelerated. If it isn’t, momentum fades. I’ve been studying 20 years of P2P Top 30 performance data through this lens — and the patterns are striking. I’ll share more next week. For those who’ve led through disruption: What permanently changed in your program? #PeerToPeer #FundraisingLeadership #CampaignArchitecture #P2P30 #NonprofitStrategy
