Charlie Weiss reposted thisCharlie Weiss reposted thisCMOs have two choices right now: either you can panic about the rise of AI search, or you can turn it into a compelling case for increased investment. I’d recommend the latter...as long as can prove you’re using it to drive greater impact. Good piece from Sam Bradley at Digiday on how marketers at State Farmm, Mercedes-Benz AG, and HOKA are leveraging zero-click search anxiety to argue for bigger budgets. The IAB agrees, revising its 2026 U.S. ad spend growth forecast from 9.5% to 12.3%, driven partly by this shift. State Farm's Alyson Griffin is spot-on that brand investment matters more than ever — when AI is doing the shortlisting, brand equity is your ticket to the consideration set. But protecting brand spend is only half the battle. You also have to make sure it’s working. Instead of waiting (hoping?) for AI to surface their brand among a number of options, smart advertisers are measuring and optimizing their ability to drive consumer intent from their brand spend. And they’re doing it with Convergent TV, a medium uniquely positioned to grow brand equity AND consumer demand at the same time. A great TV ad moves a consumer from awareness to intent in a single moment, and that intent shows up immediately in search behavior, regardless of whether the consumer clicks through to a website. As our research at EDO shows, these search signals are essential in a zero-click world. While the likelihood of a Google search leading to a site visit fell 22%, searches per household grew 17% — and AI Mode queries surged 202%. Clicks may be disappearing, but the intent signal is only getting stronger — and it remains the best predictor of future sales. Are you seeing AI search shift the budget conversation inside your organization? Links to related research in the comments.

Charlie Weiss shared thisOur 4th annual NFL TV Outcomes Report is live, and the headline number should get every brand's attention. The average regular-season NFL ad delivered the impact of 73 primetime spots, up 15% year over year. The average Super Bowl spot: 1,455. Pharma took the top two advertiser slots and three of the top five, running 95% more effective in NFL than in primetime broadcast and cable. AI brands showed up in force, with Microsoft's Copilot spot driving 667% more engagement than the average regular-season ad. And we measured NFL sponsorships against outcomes for the first time: 1,443 units, 139 brands, 79 games, with halftime studio segments landing 198% above the average sponsorship unit. Every one of those is a decision waiting to happen. Which is why EDO's outcomes data now sits inside the Tradedesk for seamless activation, where brands and agencies can benchmark against their category and act on it in the same workflow where they're already bidding on CTV. Critical insights and measurement against publishers and marketers often largest single investment. Full report at edo.com/nfl-ads.

Charlie Weiss shared thisSo great to make this publisher partnership with Roblox public. Whenever a video publisher needs to understand how advertising drives outcomes, EDO is the first call!Charlie Weiss shared thisWe’re teaming up with Roblox to bring EDO outcomes measurement for the first time to its immersive gaming and creation platform (it’s the first time EDO has ever ventured outside of Convergent TV in fact!). Now, brands will be able to know the immediate, ad-driven impact of their immersive ads in the Roblox platform — video ads and branded events — with the same proven outcomes trusted across Convergent TV. AI-powered optimization is creating a newly convergent advertising world, one where marketers expect (and need!) to compare performance across the many places they connect with consumers. Charlie Weiss shared thisGreat to see this from our friends and partners at Coactive AI and NBCUniversal . Congrats Josh HellerCharlie Weiss shared thisI've spent the last 2 years in rooms with publishers, advertisers, and agencies. The same conversation keeps happening. The advertiser says: "I want to own joyful family moments." The publisher says: "I can offer you Comedy, Primetime, 18-49." Both sides leave frustrated. And when you can't define the moment, you avoid it entirely. Advertisers pull budgets from news. Luxury brands blacklist UGC. Sports budgets never touch entertainment content that might be a perfect match. Avoidance has become the default strategy, and the cost is enormous on both sides of the transaction. Here's what I believe: context deserves equal footing with audience as a core media planning strategy. Not as a replacement. As a complement that drives relevancy in ways audience targeting alone never will. When you understand the context of both the content and the creative, you can match them. A sustainability campaign runs against sustainability moments aligned to the advertiser's intent. A luxury brand shows up in scenes that reinforce aspiration, not just shows that index against an income bracket. That's the unlock. And that's what we built. Today we're launching Context Studio and a completely reimagined coactive.ai. Context Studio is the first platform where advertisers and publishers work from the same definition of a moment. The brief becomes the targeting signal. The full catalog becomes discoverable. Every package comes with proof. Thank you to the entire Coactive AI team for building something truely unique. And to the team at NBCUniversal who didn't just believe in the vision, they pushed us to make it real: Ryan McConville, Michael Levin, Mike Fisher, Alison Levin, Gina Reduto, Stephane Krzywoglowy, Peter Randazzo, David Harraka, Kavitha Chandrabose, Annie Betz, and Adriana Cirianni. Since Wavemaker and DoorDash first teamed up in 2018, we’ve been partners through a period of extraordinary growth and change — from placing DoorDash’s first national media campaigns to supporting their evolution into one of the world’s leading local commerce platforms. Our partnership is a great example of the kind of growth partner we aim to be for our clients: combining global scale and local expertise with an operating model built around our clients' own data and proprietary intelligence. Now, through WPP Open and Open Intelligence, we will help DoorDash move faster, understand consumers better, and drive even more measurable, incremental growth. As media and commerce become more closely linked than ever, I’m excited about what we can build together in this next chapter. Thank you to Tim Castree and the entire DoorDash team for the trust they’re placing in us to continue accelerating their growth — and congratulations to Nancy Hall, Brad Backenstose, and everyone at WPP Media who made this expansion possible!

Charlie Weiss liked thisCharlie Weiss liked thisI don’t know about you, but September always feels a little like a second New Year. Labor Day hits, calendars start filling up again, and all the things you said you’d get back to “after the summer” suddenly reappear. I still have luggage that isn’t fully unpacked and, more importantly, a handful of conversations and follow-ups I was very sure I’d get back to “once the dust settled". There’s something energizing about the September reset, though. You start looking at what got dropped, what introductions are still hanging out there, and which conversations are worth picking back up. That’s one of the reasons why this month, ahead of our launch, is an especially good time to try Corbo. Our platform isn’t designed to help you “network” more, but rather to remember better when it matters. You can ask Corbo things like: Who haven’t I talked to since before summer? What introductions did I make that are still in motion? Or, Before I meet with Greg, remind me where we left off and if I owe him anything. Those are simple questions, but the answers are often layered, scattered, or covered in some of that settled dust. So, this is my annual reminder to unpack the remnants of summer vacation, answer the emails that have been nagging me, and maybe even start up some fruitful new conversations. If your September reset sounds similar to mine, I’d love for you to try Corbo. We’re still a few weeks out from launch, and your feedback is especially valuable and timely. Charlie Weiss liked thisCharlie Weiss liked thisToday we're announcing a $5.5 million round for emberos, and gratitude is the first thing I want to say out loud. That brings us to $6.7 million raised to date. Brand management and visibility is being rewritten in real time. People used to discover, evaluate, and trust brands through search engines. Now that path runs through AI systems, and most companies have no way to see themselves through that lens, let alone manage what shows up. That's the problem we started emberos to solve, and getting to work on it every day has been its own reward. We're building something the market needs and at rapid speed. This round says the market agrees the moment is now. Thank you to our investors and advisors for betting on the vision and on this team's ability to build it. Your confidence carries a signal past the capital. AI brand presence is becoming a category companies can't afford to sit out. And to just some of the incredible clients who trusted us early and continue to push us forward: Stagwell, Riot Games, The Honest Company, RA Capital Management, WHITESPACE, Monigle, BERO, and many more. Building alongside partners of this caliber makes all the difference. We've got a great team at emberos. Super smart with a ton of experience. The investment is fuel. More R&D, more hires, and more depth in the product our customers already lean on. The models are already answering questions about your brand today. We're building the way you see those answers, and change them. Let's go. Special shoutouts: Mo Rhim, Jeffrey Cruttenden, Rebecca McClain, Sonny McCracken, Dan Roberts, Matt Adams, Emily Schwartz, Corey Stanton

Meta just confirmed what I've been arguing for months. In their Q4 earnings call, they explicitly stated that investments in GEM (Generative Engagement Models) are improving ad performance and attracting more ad dollars. [FULL QUOTE BELOW] Most marketers will hear this and think: "More AI hype." They're wrong. Meta has fundamentally re-engineered its ad platform at the technical level. It's invisible to most people: -Consumers just see better ads at the right time -Advertisers see the same campaign manager interface -Unless you've hit a scaling wall, you might not notice anything I wrote about this shift a few weeks ago (link in comments): Meta moved from interest-based targeting to predictive intent. From "show ads to people who like yoga" to "show ads to people our system predicts will buy yoga mats in the next 72 hours, regardless of their stated interests." That's not an incremental improvement. That's a different product. Here's what frustrates me about all the AI hype: everyone's trying to predict how this technology will change the world in 10 years. Meanwhile, the companies that invented this stuff—Google, Meta—are already using it. Not in some flashy consumer app. In their ad stacks. Because that's what drives their stock price. If you're still running Meta ads the same way you did two years ago—optimizing around interests, testing endless creative variations, obsessing over attribution—you're putting the same gas you use for your Corolla into a rocket ship. The platform has changed. Your strategy needs to change with it. What does that mean practically? Feed the algorithm more signals. Give it conversion data. Give it the creative diversity it needs to learn what works. Let it find your customers instead of you trying to define them. Trust the predictive engine you're paying to access. The marketers who adapt to this shift will scale. The ones who don't will keep hitting walls they can't explain. --- Susan Li, CFO "In Q4, we doubled the number of GPUs we used to train our GEM model for ads ranking. We also adopted a new sequence learning model architecture, which is capable of using longer sequences of user behavior and processing much richer information about each piece of content. The GEM and sequence learning improvements together drove a 3.5% lift in ad clicks on Facebook and a more than 1% gain in conversions on Instagram in Q4. This new sequence learning architecture is significantly more efficient than our prior architectures, which should enable us to further scale up the data, complexity and compute we use in our future ranking models to deliver performance gains. As we scale up our foundational ads models like GEM, we are also developing more advanced models to use downstream of them at run-time for ads inference. In Q4, we launched a new runtime model across Instagram Feed, Stories, and Reels, resulting in a 3% increase in conversion rates in Q4."

In August, Outsell, Inc. released findings from the 2026 B2B Buyers Study. In this study, we interviewed 226 buyers/audience members across a number of key B2B vertical sectors. The study provided some great insights into the role AI has in the vendor selection process and the impact AI is having on the overall purchase funnel. Hint: it's significant. But for my colleagues working in B2B media, the takeaways can help us all breathe a sigh of relief. For the past few years, brands have seen diminishing traffic as AI tools like ChatGPT took hold. That's where those of us in media have struggled to understand our new role in the AI age. There's good news. In the study, buyers said AI is the primary driver of vendor selection. But, as my co-author Rebecca Kitchens rightly points out, not one buyer solely relies on AI for purchasing. In fact, 99% said that, while AI is a starting point, they need to verify. And in that verification process, media has a home. Let's look at some of the study results to support this case. While AI is a vital tool, it falls short in providing all the insights that buyers need. B2B buyers pointed to consistency, currency, and depth as key shortfalls in the process. When you look at open responses, B2B buyers talk about AI missing areas like real-life implementation, compliance, and timing required for rollout as key limitations. So how do buyers fill this gap? They turn to third-party sources to provide content and insights that AI is not equipped to provide. 54% of respondents pointed to side-by-side comparisons of providers across key product attributes as a valuable tool. Additionally, 54% pointed to user-generated reviews, and 38% pointed to directories as tools they look to for help. For media brands, the more telling story lies in their reliance on industry media. In the study, 42% of respondents increased their use of industry media at this point in the purchase process. Note the phrase "point in the process." Buyers are not looking to media brands to provide content at the top of the purchase funnel. At that point, AI is at its strongest and is winning the battle. The need is further down the purchase funnel, where detailed evaluation and hard decisions are being made. For media brands, this will require an engagement model shift. Living at the top of the funnel with news and overview/market outlook content will not win the game. The focus needs to shift to developing content that helps buyers/audience members validate and decide. This is the area where peer reviews and product comparisons live — all key needs shown in the Outsell 2026 B2B Buyers Study. So the picture is brighter for B2B media. But the media brands that survive will need to change the content — both live and online — they produce. The ones that don’t will face a tough road ahead. If you're a B2B operator or media brand and want to learn more about the study, let's talk. Send me a DM.

I used to find the media industry to be boring, slow moving, and lacking innovation. Too rooted in questionable data, mirky attribution, an over-emphasis on performance, and not enough in emotion or passion or creativity. Sorry, just being honest. But as I've gotten deeper into it over the past couple of years, it feels like a lot of big industry dinosaurs looking up at the meteor and think they know what's coming, but have no idea. (Now THAT is exciting!) 2026 won't just be another year in media. I genuinely think it’s the year media changes shape pretty significantly. Forget incremental tweaks. Media in 2026 means AI moving from tool to strategist, planner, creator, optimizer. Content distributed where attention already lives in the moment, and video as the anchor of every experience. We’ve become a world where short-form should be everywhere and contextual relevance will trump identity signals... and where consumer trust, human-first storytelling, and creator collaboration drive actual outcomes. Brands that master agentic AI workflows, curated media quality, and micro-audience precision will win. The focus shifts from reach and attention... to intention: engineered, measured, and earned. 2026 will reward those who build layers of relevance, not relic channels. So let's have an HONEST conversation where media actually works. 🚀

Retail media's Wild West chapter is officially closing. The industry must align on incrementality and measurement. Now. That is David Cohen's message as IAB CEO. April 14. The IAB launches "Building a More Competitive Commerce Media Ecosystem." The shift: from growth mode to maturity mode. The agenda: in-store media, cross-channel activation, new org structures, and AI-driven commerce. The goal: alignment on measurement and impact. Is operational discipline the real driver of retail media's next phase, or just a polite way of saying growth is stalling? Full article in the first comment

A former WPP executive has filed a lawsuit alleging he faced retaliatory termination after he repeatedly raised concerns about the agency's vendor kickbacks and incentive deals. For years, I've spoken about the problems with the acceleration of principal trading and opaque incentive deals by agency holding companies, and how it's detrimental to advertisers and publishers alike. One may observe that there are some interesting similarities between Mr. Foster's complaint and the op-ed I wrote when I left Interpublic Group (IPG)'s UM Worldwide. The complaint reads: "Although WPP publicly touts a 'client-first' ethos and claims 'zero tolerance' for corrupt and unethical practices, in reality a significant share of its profits comes from leveraging client spend to extract rebates, media inventory, and other financial incentives that benefit WPP at the expense of the very clients whose funds make them possible. To protect this hidden profit stream, WPP punishes those who 'speak up' and threaten the culture of client abuse and improper behavior of many senior executives." h/t to Business Insider's Lara O'Reilly, as always, for the incredible reporting. Link is in the comments to the story, and to the complaint.

Netflix and Roku launched Conversion APIs this week. Not for measurement. For competition. Here's what happened: Performance advertisers have been treating streaming video as brand awareness media while dumping their conversion budgets into Meta and Google. The platforms couldn't prove direct ROI, so they got the leftover branding dollars. Now Netflix can track conversions just like Facebook. Roku can optimize for purchases just like Google Ads. The $38 billion performance TV market isn't theoretical anymore. It's happening. And every streaming platform that can't prove conversions is about to lose their performance budgets to the ones that can. Publishers sitting on premium video inventory have 12 months to implement conversion tracking or watch their most profitable advertisers shift spend to Netflix's advertising tier. The measurement gap between streaming and digital just closed. Your competition isn't other publishers anymore, it's every platform that can prove ROI. Performance TV isn't coming. It's here.
