This week, we started a new course at Universidade Federal de Itajubá, IESTI05 - Edge Machine Learning Systems Engineering. IESTI05 is a 15-week undergraduate course designed to teach students how to implement AI systems on edge devices, specifically using Raspberry Pi platforms. Credentials shouldn’t depend on PDFs. And verification shouldn’t take days. NOVA IMS is now issuing academic credentials as Verifiable Credentials, using blockchain technology aligned with W3C standards, OpenID, and the EBSI pilot. It’s the first production rollout of its kind in Portugal, placing NOVA IMS among Europe’s early adopters. Students can store credentials in their own digital wallet and share proof of a qualification in seconds with employers and institutions – who can verify authenticity automatically, reducing friction and fraud risk. The NOVA IMS Academic Credential Portal was developed by the Nova Blockchain Lab at NOVA IMS, led by Joana Rodrigues Pereira, with development by Francisco Ribeiro. NOVA IMS Dean, Miguel de Castro Neto, highlights its value for students and employers: “As a public school, we have a responsibility to lead solutions that bring real value to the country and to higher education. Our COO Margarida Garcia addressed a critical challenge at MIT Technology Review's EmTech conference: why context is everything in AI coding. The problem? Current tools stay very much at the surface. They can fix isolated bugs but struggle with multi-file editing and understanding how complex systems connect. When errors span interconnected files, generic AI tools can't trace the root cause contextually. "Understanding a codebase in some enterprise environments is effectively a nightmare," Garcia explained. "Having tools that bridge that gap and actually ingest, learn from the context—that can be your intelligence layer that knows more about your codebase than any engineer around." This is why poolside deploys within your security boundaries, understanding your specific context rather than offering surface-level solutions.

I had the opportunity to test GLIWA T1 4.0 recently. Thanks to Cristian Garzón and Germano Brunacci for the oportunity. GLIWA T1 4.0 is not “new.” It’s just less friction. And that matters. And honestly: it’s hard to improve an already great tool without just adding noise. This feels like the opposite, same fundamentals, fewer steps, faster loops. What stood out in my quick test: - Overall it feels faster (less waiting, quicker iterations) - A new page that puts the key information in one place, no more tab switching between cont / scope / … just to keep context - A very practical one: T1.flex across all functions at once, no more manual work selecting each function, starting measurements, repeating the same setup cycle Why this matters in real projects: timing/resource closure isn’t blocked by “lack of data”, it’s blocked by workflow friction. Reducing manual steps increases cadence and makes it easier to keep integration disciplined. What’s your biggest time sink today in timing analysis: setup/selection, running measurements, or turning results into decisions?

Automotive Cybersecurity This may be one of the hottest topics in the industry, primarily because the UN R155 regulation has become mandatory, and consequently, ISO 21434 is also becoming obligatory in order to comply with that regulation. There are many challenges in automotive cybersecurity, mainly, how to protect something that is widely accessible to the general public. On one hand, there's that broad exposure, and on the other hand, there's a global shortage of skilled professionals. Modern vehicles today are complex assets that combine both IT and OT. This means you need to consider cloud infrastructure, software, web, and networks on one side, and hardware, firmware, and sensors on the other. To cover all of this, a multidisciplinary team is needed, one that understands security by design, security throughout the software development lifecycle, penetration testing, and even safety aspects when working with the OT side. From a technical perspective, embedded engineers are often unaware of the problems that can be caused by using standard functions like memcpy. While some might claim it's obsolete, in reality, it's still widely used. Engineers often resort to shortcuts; not because they lack knowledge, but because they're under pressure. In addition to low-level programming errors, another critical issue is access to the CAN network, especially from infotainment systems. An attacker can override the CAN bus and send high-priority messages directly from the infotainment unit. Even more concerning are aftermarket systems, which are often poorly tested or not tested at all, and are installed simply to provide more features. Moreover, in 2023, the highest volume of attacks targeted telematics systems i.e., remote attacks, showing just how unprepared the industry is for what lies ahead. In the future, and already today, cars will become increasingly digitalized. Every new feature increases the attack surface. Therefore, this issue will need to be taken seriously, because with the popularization of any technology comes the popularization of its darker side as well.
