The default program for "View Source" has been set to the Windows notepad by accident, Notepad++ should be instead the default program. How can be changed/reset this setting - see the below screenshot.

Apart from the fact that this post is more than 14 years old and should be valid for Outlook 2010, the OP mentions the solution doesn't work and I couldn't apply the solution either.

Update:

  1. I checked the default application for .html and what is defined in the Outlook section under Windows Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Outlook (or Outlook classic)) >
  2. I had a look in the registry in the Outlook tree but I couldn't really find anything.

  • What is used as the default application to open .html files? On searching have seen some suggestions that Outlook 2024 uses the Windows default application to view the HTML source of applications. This is a comment, and not an answer, since don't have Outlook 2024 to verify that changing the Windows default file association for .html will allow you to use Notepad++. Commented yesterday
  • If you go to Windows Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Outlook (or Outlook classic)) > does Notepad feature in that list for any of the types or links? I had a similar issue where if I clicked 'Mailto:` on an e-mail inside Classic Outlook, it loaded up the new style Outlook instead. I had to come into here to change the link for MAILTO back to Outlook (classic). Commented yesterday

Perhaps using the Sysinterals Process Monitor could identify the registry setting / configuration file which Outlook uses to determine the application to view the HTML source. Albeit ProcMon can produce a large volume of logging. Commented yesterday

Outlook's view source opens the HTML as a .txt file.

You need to change the Windows Default App for file type .txt to Notepad++

Please note that this might also cause any other operation that opens a .txt file to open it in Notepad++

I have to admit that I am now a bit ashamed that I didn't get this simple solution. I was simply thinking too complicated and didn't think of one of the last steps in the chain: checking the default app for a .txt file. You see in the notepad title that it's a .txt file, so it's indeed very obvious which extension is used. In our case it's the "desired" behaviour that all .txt files open with Notepad++. Thx and +1 Commented yesterday
