💼 Job Hunt Learning Series (Day 2) Day 2 was all about bringing time awareness and business intelligence into PySpark workflows ⏱️ This time, I took up a subscription analytics use case — figuring out how to track active users, identify lapsed ones, and calculate engagement trends from time-series data. Here’s what I worked on 👇 🔹 Lag & Lead Functions — used `lag()` and `lead()` to compare each user’s current activity with their previous or next subscription period. Perfect for tracking churn or reactivation patterns. 🔹 Date-Based Insights — calculated gaps between consecutive events using `datediff()` and handled those tricky `"ongoing"` subscriptions gracefully by replacing them with `current_date()`. 🔹 Dynamic Flags for Active Users — used conditional logic with `when()` to tag users who were *still active* in a given time window. 🔹 Clean ETL Pipeline — joined `user_behavior` and `subscription` data, filtered for active subscribers, and aggregated total watch time — a real example of how media platforms measure engagement. 🔹 Bonus: Learned to combine `groupBy()` and `orderBy()` correctly for ranked summaries, and cast all date columns properly to avoid silent errors. "Aadi, I am heading a D2C data team. How should I set up analytics to get the most output and impact from the small data team?" A friend asked me this as he joined a growing D2C brand last year. Here's the complete list of things I told him to do: 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲.  • Google Tag Manager - With GTM, analysts can trigger events for the smallest user actions and changes happening on the site. It's easy. You can also get events from third-party services like Gokwik or the search widget. A good D2C setup can have 100-200 events.  • Data pipelines: Use tools like Fivetran or Airbyte to get data from your Shopify tables, ads reports, and any other source into your database. Must have all your data in one place.  • Data Warehouse (BigQuery): This is where the actual work happens - you store data, automate transformation, and run queries. BigQuery is just the easiest, cheapest and most obvious choice. Once you have the data from all your sources in one place, it's time to convert raw data into useful data models - or - 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 The transformation layer includes everything between raw data and final outputs. This is where you get the ROI for your data investment. In D2C, you will be dealing with 3 types of data:  1. Events from GA4, webhooks, 3rd party services connecting  2. Fact tables that come as snapshots - Shopify orders  3. Aggregated data that updates over a few days: this is from Google and Meta Ads reports You have to clean this up, combine it, and create automated tables for the outputs you need. This is a ongoing process for any data team. I will share more details in a post this week. You can setup this layer using tools like dataform / dbt for managing the pipelines. Dataform is easier and enough for most shopify stores. Don't forget to create data sanity dashboards once you have data models. They build trust and give you peace of mind. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆, 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁.  • Send daily slack and gmail reports.   • Create automated weekly reviews in spreadsheets  • Create Dashboards with filters that stakeholders need That's all! Do this and you have a best in class data setup.
