Jackie Prince shared thisThe Dirt: Building a Clean Wellness Brand Issue 1: Our first fundraise, love-hate demos & a few fails ✨ August was huge for Guests on Earth: - Closed our first Friends & Family fundraise 💸 - Hit the road in LA for demos at Erewhon + The Detox Market 🌴 - Learned the hard way what happens when you don’t make enough laundry detergent 😅 Fundraising brought a new level of rigour to our forecasting and planning. Demos reminded me of the importance of staying on top of the in-store experience, connecting with customers and retail managers. Selling out of laundry twice since launch continues to teach us the balance between being conservative vs. more aggressive with our projections. It’s an unexpected and culturally fun extension of our mission to make cleaning MORE JOYFUL and LESS WASTEFUL. I had dinner this weekend with Marta LaRock, PhD, Brand Strategy Consultant, who hired me at Y&R New York in 2000. That began a relationship that would take us through several chapters. Marta later tapped me to join her at Publicis. I also had the privilege of teaching alongside her at Miami Ad School’s Boot Camp for Account Planners. Years later, we worked together again at mcgarrybowen. Twenty six years after we first met, the connection is still there. We still build on each other’s thinking, laugh, get completely energized talking about how the industry is evolving, and just as easily talk about life and what it has taught us along the way. What struck me most is that some people do more than become part of your history. They continue shaping where you go next. It got me thinking about what great leaders do. They believe in people. They care about the person, not just the work. They set high standards, share what they know, support people when things get hard, and give others room to grow into more than they may have imagined for themselves. You see the effect years later. So many of the students we taught and people we mentored are now leading teams, running departments and mentoring others themselves. That is what stays with me. You can give someone an opportunity. But when you believe in them, support them, push them and appreciate them, you can leave a mark that lasts far longer than the job itself. And hopefully, they pass some of that on. Because people remember what it felt like when someone truly believed in them and had their back. For all the ways work will keep changing, I hope we never lose that. So it’s pretty surreal to see my own up there now. A few months ago, I decided to go out on my own with a pretty simple bet: AI needs a daily live business show of its own. I knew the story was big but I didn’t quite appreciate how quickly the appetite would build around a new way of covering it, or how many people would want to help make it happen. Thank you Nasdaq. The studio is under construction and the daily show goes live in a few weeks.

To a kid, that lobby felt like a vault of grown-up secrets, gleaming counters, hushed conversations, and the sharp, rhythmic clack of dot-matrix printers chattering behind the teller line. Then came the grand ceremony. The teller slid a crisp, brand-new bankbook across the counter directly to me. Not to my mom, to me. My mom reached into her purse, smiled, and handed over a crisp five-dollar bill to fund my very first deposit. The teller fed the little booklet into the printer, and a second later, there it was in stark black ink: +$5.00. My brain short-circuited. I wasn't just a kid tagging along on errands anymore, I had an official paper trail. I had capital. I was a full-fledged tycoon feeling 10 feet tall in my fresh electric-blue L.A. Gear Lights kicks. I was rich. I was an adult. I had a bank account. I tucked that booklet into my jacket pocket like it was forged from solid gold, convinced that absolute peak of adrenaline and excitement could never be topped. …That was until right now. :) I’m absolutely thrilled to announce a new multi-year partnership between Cohere & TD! TD has committed an initial investment of up to $25M over the next three years to drive enterprise AI development and adoption, kicking off a strategic collaboration between Cohere, TD, and Layer 6. Jackie Prince liked thisJackie Prince liked thisThis summer, I said no to the two biggest builds anyone has ever offered me. A creative agency I'd been working with wanted two new tools. Both were great ideas. Both would have been so much fun to build. Plus, I loved the team. But when I really looked at them, I realized they weren't one-off builds with an end date. They were products I would have to keep improving and iterating on forever. It needed someone who could live in them full time. Talk to users. Ship updates. Iterate on the spot. Fix what breaks. Decide what comes next. Honestly, it probably needed someone on their team. So I had to tell them that I couldn't take it on because, by that point, I'd decided Pare would focus specifically on one thing: ops automations for consumer brands. Saying yes would have pulled me right out of that. But I didn't want to just walk away. Plus the team had already put so much time into discovery. So I packaged up everything we'd designed together. The docs, the meeting transcripts, the visuals, the code, and a guide for whoever picks it up next. That way, their team has full agency and ownership over it. Saying no to money is scary when your business is new. But every yes to something off-focus is a no to the thing you said you would build. What's the best thing you ever said no to?

As Crispin, now owned by Stagwell, tries to regain its early-2000s creative stature and leans further into creator- and social-led work, Malek sees James’s legacy perspective as an advantage. James is already introducing an audience-first approach, including a social-listening exercise he calls “chop up the algorithm,” reinforcing the agency’s “best idea is boss” philosophy. While our sector has been going through some really dynamic changes, these institutions decided to embrace that shift and modernize their visual identity. Then you look at University of Guelph. Their new logo showcases a proud history in athletics and the representation of the Gryphons.
